This. If anything, I hear more New Orleans people bring up the subject between the two cities.

Similar deal with the whole "ULL is LSU's little brother" phenomenon. It's only LSU fans that I ever hear bring that up.

USL folks must be 50+ by now. It's University of Louisiana at Lafayette now.

You need to say this properly:

no one gives a shite about NOLA at Lafayette.

I've been in Atlanta almost 10 years now, but I still question my decision to leave. I seldom go back so I don't really know what it's like there now.

Old Metairie is even better now.

This thread as a whole is hilarious. I can’t believe people come here for genuine advice on moving.

What’s the draw? Stable economy with high paying medical/oilfield/tech/other jobs, cost of living etc.?

Affordable cost of living, rich culture of food and music, strong medical community with lots of jobs, great education/school system, college that has lots to offer with tuition won't cost you an arm & a leg, every weekend there is some type of music and/or food festival promoting the local history and way of life. Nurses and medical professionals in Lafayette do very well and live comfortably. Great area to raise a young family.

I grew up and spent 18 years in Metairie (70's and mid 80's). Went to LSU for 3 semesters before moving to Lafayette in 1987. I'm not a Boudreaux, Hebert, or Doucet, but married a Cajun girl and have been here ever since. Lafayette had 4 murders in 1987 ... 34 murders in 2021, 20 in 2020, 18 in 2019, and 14 in 2018. Yes crime is on the rise just like every other city in LA and around the country. The murders are mostly drug related by 18-25 yr olds in the lower income poverty-stricken areas. Those same young "entrepreneurs" will engage in gun violence at The Mall, downtown bar scene area on Jefferson Street, or local fast-food restaurant with other thugs they have a beef with.

I've travelled quite a bit around the country and visited dozens of cities. Lafayette and the Acadiana area of 7 Parishes is truly unique and unlike any place in the U.S. (Unless you've lived or grew up here, you won't understand this statement). The people are proud of their culture and want to share it with others. Most people are genuine and will give you the shirt off their back. People will greet you with a smile and engage in conversation with complete strangers to ask "how are you doing" or "where are you from". This area will welcome you with open arms and make sure you're treated like one of their own. My only sadness for the Lafayette area is the original Cajun French language will be a thing of the past once people's grandparents and older relatives eventually die. In another decade or two it will only be a memory and very little is being done to preserve the French language.

Regarding food: only place you will find boudin & cracklins that are sold at most gas stations, or mom & pop grocery stores with the 7 Parish area. I know you can buy boudin & cracklins in Lake Chuck, Jennings, Houma, Thibodeaux, Donaldsonville, etc... but these items can be bought everywhere in the Lafayette and surrounding areas. On my commute to work, I pass in front of NuNu's, Bourque's, and Kartchner's.

I grew up in Lafayette and moved around alot. As I got close to retirement, I decided to come home. I have a new purchased vehicle with Texas plates and live in Broussard. We need to get it La titled.

That's my story.

Just make sure to avoid New Iberia at all costs as it is a shithole of epic proportions.

What makes me angry is how when people pass thru on I-10 or down 90 to the airport, all you see is ghetto and crap roads. We are so much more than that once you get past that first 2-3 miles.

A loop or a “future I-49” through there sure would help

Maybe in another 20 years

It's a little depressing to me. Somebody made a reference to "teardown" houses... man, people built lives and memories there. Sorry they're not 3,800 square foot Perry houses with batting cages in the back yard.
