first, this is a great question. jw's call this "tacking" from sailing terminology. it basically means "we got this totally wrong and we're going to explain it away by acting like we have better information now."

Is that the church's official stance?

Mormons have owned lots of acreage for years, they do it for the capital gains and have for nearly a century.

From way back..

quote:

In Florida, the church owns what Orlando broker Trevor Hall says "may be the state's largest piece of privately owned undeveloped real estate."

The 315,000-acre Deseret Ranches, bought in the 1950s, is home to orange groves and cattle. But its location, about five miles southeast of booming Orlando, has caused its value to jump. The church is planning to build a community with 5,000 homes and 4,200 apartments, plus schools, offices and stores.
LINK

They also rent farms to non-mormons so I think the earlier story about firing the non-LDS cowboys was BS.

They may try and spread the gospel, but I doubt they are firing the non Mormons. Their holdings are very vast and the linked article is 24 years old.

A guy cut me off while driving on the interstate today. He was a Mormon, and I told him so.

they don't use the word tacking but, that is absolutely their stance. that's what the prophet is for. to "fill in the blanks" where scriptures are silent or new information is acquired. for example, blacks were required to spiritually become white until the '70's. a black person could not be saved. after the civil rights movement, they started losing members and thus, money. so, they changed their stance. now black people are allowed to become saved.

convenient theology.

Mormons are unbelievably great people, there is no denying that.

My question is, if their founder, Joseph Smith, and Brigham Young both practiced polygamy openly and endorsed it how did the church ban the practice? I mean if they think it's wrong how they can be so devout in following a person who participated in it?
----------------------------------------------------------
The plural marriage concept didn't really take off under Joeseph Smith. After Smith's murder and the Mormon exodus to Utah, Brigham Young really got polygamy within the LDS church cranked up.

The LDS "Prophet" dictates what church members will, or will not, do. He's the direct voice of God on earth, so whatever the Prophet says, pretty much goes.
When the (primarily LDS) residents of the Utah Territory wanted statehood, they were faced with a problem. Congress didn't approve of polygamy and was unlikely to be dissuaded of their viewpoint. So, very conveniently, the Prophet got the word from God that polygamy was no longer approved. Lo and behold, shortly thereafter...
Utah was granted statehood.
For many years, "dark people" were not allowed to be members of the LDS church. But, about 35 or 40 years ago, after realizing that most every white person who was going to join had already joined, the Prophet got word from the Almighty that blacks could be members.
It must be good to be the Prophet!

Are there really a lot of Puerto Ricans moving to Central Florida?

eta: This thing is 50 miles from Orlando and is not really that convenient to the turnpike or i-95.

d to a very Mormon community in high school...I didn't know what a Mormon was. Some people asked me to eat lunch with them and they were all really nice but when the topic turned to religion and they found out I wasn't Mormon and had no interest in being Mormon, they never talked to me again.

I have three neighbors right around me that are Mormon and play on their church softball and flag football teams and have never been treated any differently than any other person Mormon or not. I'm calling bullshite on you there they probably just thought you were a douche bag.

Mormons believe that you are never justified in breaking the law. In fact, one of the articles of faith of the LDS religion is the following:

quote:

We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

So, when the US government declared plural marriages illegal, the LDS church complied. It's really as simple as that.

Seriously, I wonder if now that the Supreme Court has redefined marriage regarding the sex of the participants how long it'll take someone to further the definition by broadening the number or participants. They may get their way after all...

I live in a predominately mormon community in New Mexico and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

It's clean, safe, plenty of kids playing outside, and my neighbors are great.

I can't believe how many posters are singing the praises of Mormons in here. They must have some great PR folks to have all of you fooled into thinking they're these wonderful people.

No idea. I'm LDS. Speaking for myself, I have no interest in more than one wife. None. I don't know any Mormon men that feel differently.

No idea what if they're "wonderful people", but they are great neighbors.

I don't care what their religious beliefs are. This is all that matters.

I live in very close vicinity to three different families and another 5 families in my subdivision and have had nothing but great experiences. I don't understand what or why a pr person would have anything to do with anything. Everyone has their own beliefs and I don't agree with more than most of them however I can tell you that the Mormons I know are the healthiest eating and living people that I know. They all have gardens, their kids eat vegetables and fruit as snacks not candy or soft drinks and no fast food. Plus they are always bringing fresh breads and vegetables to us because they have to much. Maybe you should pump the brakes before throwing a whole group under a bus for your either one bad experience or whatever the hell you read or watched.

Lucas,

What exactly is it that you think Mormons are hiding?

I have been here for three years and most weekends we have parties outside that we are up with music until late at night and even though we keep it down I know that some residual noise and laughter has to be heard by them since I have a family on both sides of me and across the street, and I have never had a single issue. They are invited to every event and a lot of times show up even though we are drinking and carrying on and have never had a problem with anything we were doing or tried to steer us different. In fact we got a text message yesterday asking if we would throw a party for Halloween so the kids could come play at our house and do smores while we hang out and watch football.
