I grew up in Viking land. This happened once while I lived there, they aren't fricking around when they say it's a once in 20 year cold blast.

I have an aunt and uncle that live in Minnesota....less than 10 miles from Canada. They have sod on their roof. I vaguely remember then talking about plugging their cars in at night so they don't freeze???

Ely and Intl. Falls Mn are notorious for the cold. Cold air sinks around those border lakes and stays there but they are a rarity in the lower 48.

They are similar to interior Alaska when it comes to climate.

I had an uncle that moved from Minneapolis to Alaska. Fairbanks if I'm not mistaken...he acted like the weather was very similar but the biggest difference was daylight.

Minneapolis is similar to Anchorage, climate wise except Anchorage gets considerably more snow. Not extremely cold. Fairbanks is a whole other level of winter. Not only does it stay below zero quite a bit of the time, winters start early and last a long time.

It's one of the warmest cities in Ak though, in summer.

Just the opposite for me. I find hot weather pleasant and invigorating. I endure cold weather.

Yeah, Anchorage doesn't get below zero that often. Average highs in Jan are in the low 20's. It's on the coast.

Our winters are balmy compared to Minnesota. I haven't seen below zero temps in years.

Me too. I'd take August in Baton Rouge year round.

Sounds like my dad. Anything below 60 is too cold for him.

The coldest temp I've been in was 3 degrees in Connecticut. This will sound crazy but we flew out of NOLA early that morning and it was high 20's...it felt colder than Hartford. Obviously it was another major freeze if NOLA was in the 20's bc I don't think that is typical weather for Hartford either. I remember some people died overnight in their cars stranded in snow.

Coldest I've felt was about 30 below in the Yukon. It wasn't that bad because there wasn't any wind.

Coldest I've ever been was when it was around zero, and we had winds over 100 mph. Some video

He miscalculated the windchill by quite a bit.

Damn -18 and it's still raining.
But, that is freaking cold. I'm already not looking forward to low getting to down to about 20 here on the Southshore.
