Military Deployment / Active Duty

First of all, thanks to all those who serve and have served protecting our freedoms.
For those who are active duty, how are you notified of deployment? I ask as this pertains to a staff member of mine, who requested off of work to bring their spouse to an AFB for deployment. Would the staff member be able to produce documentation of deployment orders so that I know they are not ducking out on their shift. Also are there set departure days of the week?

You sound like very over bearing boss if you are requesting proof of someone deploying. 0/10 would not work for you

Would hate working for you based off of this. If your staff member is having a spouse leave the country for a year, you're not even going to let them take a few hours off to say goodbye without a doctor's note?

Not over bearing at all. In fact, I sense that I am being taken advantage of. There is a pattern developing with this person of missing Fridays and Mondays. I don't want to go here with this person on this reason, but I sense we are being left high and dry on busy days. I've never flinched in letting them have off for this.

The SM will have orders but contain a lot of private information. Unless he is some kind of special forces, last minute notice on deployments very rarely happen. More than likely he is married ready to move on from this side piece.

First of all, YWFMS
Second of all it's probably not a true deployment, but more so a unit deployment to a non hostile area.
Service members typically know a good amount of time before a deployment. Usually units rotate. For example we were 7 months in and 12 off before next TOA.
Usually there isn't orders, but it is something their admin can write a letter. Dates probably aren't exact but close to it for OPSEC and Ops reasons.

Just ask this individual for the spouses unit and give them a call.

I was Navy so not the same situation but we were simply told we were going out on a certain and given a very tentative projected date of return.
If she is AF, wouldn't she be transferring to another command and therefore have written orders to deploy to an overseas command?

For the Army: There is an unofficial notification, usually provided by the unit chain of command that happens well in advance. It doesn't become official until the service member receives their TCS (temporary change of station) orders. Usually the official notification happens very close to the departure date (about 2-3 weeks).
As for departure days - the service member has little to no control over that. All of the travel is based off backward planning, contracted air availability, and a lot of other factors. Right now getting into Iraq is about a 5-10 day process depending on when your intra-theater flight departs. Its even worse for getting out as you are not the priority.

1. For fricking fricks sake... if you are worried about them shirking and lying about this....... you have the wrong people.
2. generally deployment date is fluid. ie.... on or about june 14.... but BE HERE READY june 11

I suppose if you really wanted to be a douche and make them do this, the documentation exists.
But I was on AD 15 years ago and they just told us we were going and then we would go to get shots and dental work done if need be. They didn't give us documentation but of course it exists somewhere.

We got orders when our unit went to deploy. It was a scheduled unit deployment. all your shite goes into storage, and then you go. You usually get a good bit of notice if it’s a scheduled deployments, like several months unless you’re a new boot drop who has only been there for a few weeks. but if it’s a SOF team, then it can be within 24 hours or sooner.
Also, you sound like a really overbearing boss and I would not work for someone like you. If you can’t/don’t trust your employees, don’t keep them on.
