They are called VR routes. We have two in the BTR airspace, one crosses I-12 near Walker and the other is up near Amite - Kentwood area. They are very low level VFR training routes.

Correct. That is actually the same VR. It is VR1023 that starts near the coast just west of Mobile, goes northwest up toward Hattiesburg, then goes west toward McComb before turning southwest past Kentwood and hits a "turnaround" point at Pine Grove, LA near Walker. It then heads up past Independence, through Angie near Franklinton and ends north of Gulfport.

No

My brother is a pilot. His friend and flight instructor was killed in a flight collision. Just kinda hits home for me.

sorry to hear that, not that it's a consolation but that's kind of where the hit the ground with your hair on fire mentality comes from, young guys with high aspirations, in a high risk environment, have to adopt a here today gone tomorrow attitude, just more of a me here tomorrow attitude, again, sorry

Finally caught up in this thread. There is a lot of baseless blame, inaccurate assumptions, and incorrect information being thrown out. None of us were there nor were we witnesses. Throwing blame out is unwarranted at this point since we don't know what happened.

Just because the F-16 has a radar, doesn't mean s/he had it in Air-to-Air mode and even if it was, it is no guarantee that the Cessna would have shown up well if the Cessna was below the F-16.

TCAS responds to Mode C transponders, not other TCAS systems. How do I know this? Because I fly a B-52 that does not have TCAS but has set off the TCAS warnings in aircraft that are equipped. I'm not sure if the F-16 has TCAS or not. Even if equipped it either could have been failed or the Cessna didn't have Mode C on. Again, wasn't there and don't know if either instance is the case here.

Some keep talking about how slower, less maneuverable aircraft have "right of way." This is true, but is only pertinent if both aircraft knew of each other's presence. It also means that "rules of the road" apply (i.e. if it appears you are head-on course, both aircraft turn right). However, if not truly "beak to beak," the premise of nose right, go right applies and vice versa. It also means that high aircraft should break off high and low aircraft breaks off low. For all we know, one of the pilots freaked out and screwed this up.

We don't know what the F-16 was doing in the area, but the F-16 has just as much right to the airspace as the Cessna. Likewise, unless this occurred in Restricted Airspace, the Cessna has just as much right as the F-16. That said, a wise Cessna pilot should know if they are in a MOA, Warning, Alert, or other area that is congested with military traffic and take extreme caution.

Bottomline is that a tragic accident has occurred and NONE of us know the cause, nor who is at fault. Attempts to place blame, IMHO, are disrespectful and irresponsible.

Dude, you present too much logic, knowledge, and common sense to be in this thread, GTFO! JK. I do remember that you frickers were virtually invisible when you had the audacity to attack us during happy hour at Belle Chasse and we couldn't finish our drinks fast enough to scramble!

plus the aircraft in question would still show up as a primary

About a month ago, I was descending into Destin to enter the pattern (my first time at DTS). I swear a military jet got relatively close to me for a sec and scared the shite out of me then zoomed away. Thank goodness Mr. wave didn't see it bc he hates flying with me. I just hope the Cessna 150 here never saw it coming. Esp since it sounds like it was a father/son flight. Prayers to the family.

I wish I could get back in line and do it again and I've had a blessed career. Hit all of the cycles at the right time, and it looks as if you are too. You are golden! Keep it up amigo.

All good info Flying Tiger.
Spot on. Nobody knows until the report comes out.

I'm assuming your outta Barksdale.
Quick story to put a smile on your face.

I was stationed at Tyndall back in the mid 80's. During one of our Copper Flags I was off duty and doing a run over on the non flightline side of the base out near the beach. Halfway through the run I catch what I first thought was a "fast mover" coming in from over the ocean. Much to my surprise it was one of you guys BUFFs screaming at @500 ft on his way to doing a wingover of the tower.
(For those mot in the know, Tyndall conducts air defense operations where the typical Blue force (good guys) is defending the base from a usually vastly numerically superior Red Force (USSR back then). The defenders , usually a mix of F-15's, F-18s and F-4s from various units trained to repel inbounds while coordinating amongst various units.
The Barksdale BUFF I saw was doing a wingover representing his success in infiltrating our airspace with success. In other words, his way of saying the base would have been thermonuclear toast. LOL
To this day I will never forget seeing that big bird hauling arse on the deck , going by so low I could CLEARLY see the AC's white helmet!
Good times!!!! )

reminds me of a time where a certain slow student was getting a prep on things when the lead is taxiing out looking at said slow people and pointing to his watch, IP hops in, gyros(old, I know,) spinning up, we don't need no stinking gyros, lets go! good times
