MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- Emergency crews are responding to an aircraft crash near Lewisfield Plantation off of Old Highway 52.

Federal Aviation Authority officials confirm a mid-air collision between a Cessna C-150 aircraft and a F-16 fighter aircraft 11 miles north of Charleston around 11 a.m.

After officials with the SC Air National Guard confirmed none of their F-16 aircraft were involved, a defense official told ABC News that the F-16 is from the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw AFB in Sumter and the pilot ejected safely.

Coast Guard officials said the pilot has been recovered and taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle.

According to media partners SConFire.com, the incident was being reported as a "plane collision" involving a Cessna with large debris in the area.

Berkeley County spokesperson Michael Mule confirmed with ABC News 4 that a plane crash was reported and he was on his way to the scene.

Multiple resources are en route including the Department of Natural Resources. North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Bourbeau told the Associated Press the agency has sent a chief and a marine unit to assist Berkeley County with a reported plane crash, and will send other help as needed.

No mention of the cessna pilot. I'd wager nobody in that plane survived.

Odds are slim. But unless the F16 clipped the whole wing or tail Cessnas are pretty forgiving. You can crash really soft in those things.

Air National Guard apparently

ETA: I had a pretty snide remark of Active vs Guard, but it doesn't seem appropriate..

The article said South Carolina Air National Guard, which is still the Air Force, so I think the Fox8 reporter is misinformed

Maybe if it were a test fight with an aircraft manufacturer in the area. But I don't think Blackwater has f-16s.

Thread on the poliboard saying F16 pilot ejected.

quote:

Officials also say the pilot ejected from the F-16 and DNR is on the scene searching for the pilot.

There are reports toxic flames are coming from the plane. A witness tells us the crash was in a rice field about 100 feet from land, very close to the historic Lewisfield plantation home.
