You know Stryker well! As you know, their corporate culture is/was to hire ex-jocks and we had many former college athletes and a few who played in the NFL. I was there with their craniomaxillofacial division from 1996-2000 and the corporate culture was interesting. Lots of "bro's" and a hard-partying group. At a national sales meeting in Palm Springs in 1998 I got on the elevator one morning to go to a meeting and there was a product manager from another Stryker division onboard with two black eyes. Turned out he and other Stryker employees got into a brawl with another group in the hotel bar the night before. One guy remarked to me- "it's not a Stryker sales meeting unless there's a barroom brawl". Very good money to be made with Stryker but tons of pressure as far as device sales go.

Was in it for 12 years and got burnt out. Its fun for a while, but then you start to see just how arrogant doctors are and basically say -- f it

Cannot speak of the business side (Nursing handles purchasing and sales) but I like Stryker products. All of their devices and equipment seem well made.

Back when I was there if you went two years in a row without achieving 20% yearly growth you were let go, not sure if that still applies but I highly doubt it in this healthcare environment. GE Medical has/had a similar structure. From what I've heard, Intuitive Surgical (they have the da Vinci robotic systems) is right up there and they churn through reps like crazy, although successful ones are well-compensated. Same company culture as Stryker- Scottsdale friend there played football at Stanford and verifies this- and he tells me one of the local reps pulled in almost $1 million a couple of years ago. Tons of pressure go with it and it's not for everyone.

Device reps have a much tougher job than pharma reps.
They need to have a very good understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the ins and outs of their product. Many times they are basically talking the surgeon through a new device in the OR. I have had some bad trauma cases where a knowledgeable rep has really come in handy.
I'm a synthes fan personally.

BTW, for those in the medical-device industry I'm sure most are aware of the Cafepharma board.. There are generally some pretty good discussions (and lots of crap) from industry insiders and medical-device employees discussing the merits of various companies and product lines. Also, there is an industry gossip section so if want to know which rep is sleeping with their regional manager or an OR nurse it's your go-to! Sadly, I know a few who were mentioned prominently on there but thankfully I've kept my nose clean.

They sure have burned a bunch of bridges in my area. Wouldn't join ten without a 5 year guarantee and the ability to select the team. No Barbie & Ken need to apply

I think the industry as a whole is over-generalized. I'm a trauma guy and on my team there are ex-college athletes and there are guys who can't walk a straight line. There are guys who dip into the party culture (esp at national sales meetings) and some that are at church every Sunday and don't drink at all. We have guys that consistently go on company vacations because of their performance and we have guys that have attached themselves to one big Dr. and rode that wave for their whole career.
The industry varies so much from company to company, division to division, and territory to territory that its silly to say "everyone that works for a $70BB company acts this way." Like anything else - people tend to remember the outliers and proclaim them as the norm.
What I can say without a doubt is it's very competitive, hard to break into, and even more difficult to still be around after one year. The industry is mentally, physically and emotionally demanding and no one has the time or energy to worry about you as an individual. It's very easy to determine very early whether someone will make it or not.
But, if you have the dedication to your craft you'll find very few jobs that are more rewarding where you can make this kind of money.

In my segment they are know as the Walmart brand by my Docs. They consistent buy a a good product and quickly run it into the ground. Plus there are only 2 in my area that I would say are competent when it comes to procedure knowledge (i.e. really understand all aspects of the procedure and how their product can play in the entire case and assist the surgeon). Likely why they are struggling.

Been in the industry 15 years. I was a hard partying guy in my younger years and thankfully never got fired at a Sales Meeting. Now that I quit drinking it is fun watching the chaos that happens at a Sales meeting. Seen some huge frick ups where the sales/marketing employee gets to go home early.
