And you're gonna want to holler at someone when your order is wrong and there is just a screen there.

I think if I have to scan and bag my own then I should automatically get a discount at the register.

This. Screw doing the store's job for them and getting nothing in return.

these are not as cost effective as one might believe.

now Mcdonalds is going to have to hire several engineers to ensure the machines work daily

plus, you still need a "regular" employee monitoring the functionality

they are in Europe for customer convenience, not to save McDonalds money

There will still be a human presence. Those that have a hard time accepting change are in for a rude awakening. Most if not all of the major bank branches will eliminate the teller position within the next 5 years.

Not as stupid as your antivax rant, but pretty close.

Wow, I didn't think of this. But after this happens, being a manager at a McDonald's might be the sweetest gig on the planet. You just unlock the doors in the morning and let the robots do the work and deal with customers. You wouldn't have to talk to customers or employees. That sounds pretty amazing.

For a location open 24 hours: The cost of human cashiers, not counting benefits, $15/hour * 24 hours * 365 days/year = $131,400

For a location open 6AM to Midnight: $15/hour * 18 hours * 365 = $98,550.

For the machine to be cost effective, all it needs to do is cost less than $100,000 a year to buy and maintain.

They might have to end up paying the food assemblers more money, and pay to train the managers in tech support and pay them more.

I doubt it. The cooking of fast food can already be easily automated, it's just a matter of time before it becomes cost efficient. As for paying managers more so they can fix it if it breaks...Do you think they would rather pay 4-5 educated, dependable employees $80k a year or 20-30 uneducated, undependable employees $20k a year?

clearly you don't know what engineers do. Plus it said automated cashiers not automated fry cooks.

This. I saw them in the one McDonalds in downtown Barcelona when I was there 3 years ago, and it seemed there were just as many workers behind the counter. The machines mainly reduced the length of the lines.
