PORTLAND, Ore. – Dillon Reagan, 32, spent the past four years working at The Home Depot at Mall 205, but last month he says he was fired for “doing the right thing.” Reagan says he was closing for the night on May 12 in the tool rental section when a fellow employee began banging on the door.

quote:

The employee told Reagan the man assaulted the woman, reached in her vehicle, and pulled a child out of the backseat. Reagan looked outside and says he saw a man walking away with a child in his arms; the woman was following behind. Reagan heard her screaming, “Somebody help me, he's kidnapping my kid, he's stealing my kid!” To them, it seemed like a kidnapping. Reagan says his co-worker called police.

quote:

Reagan and his co-worker left the parking lot and followed the man down the street. He says police eventually arrived and returned the child back to the mother. Reagan gave a statement to police and went back to work.

quote:

I broke the safety violation of leaving the store premises while on duty,” said Reagan. About four weeks later, and after multiple meetings with his manager, Reagan was fired.

quote:

Portland Police determined the incident was not actually a kidnapping and no crimes were committed. Apparently, it was some sort of domestic dispute. Stephen Holmes, a spokesperson for Home Depot, could not comment on details of what happened, but initially told KATU via email that this is a complex situation and that they would take another look at it. A few hours later Home Depot decided they would give Reagan his job back. “We took a second look at this and have let Mr. Reagan know that we’ve decided to reverse our decision, based on the circumstances

He does end up getting his job back. Your thread title should reflect this.

So, common sense prevails and this is a non story?

Well, the op is not wrong that he got fired for doing the right thing regardless of the backtracking the company did.

Sure. Then he loses the four years he worked there, has to start over somewhere probably making less money. Has to wait to get benefits, not to mention lost pay while searching for a job.

Seems like that would be a great idea. But it would show them, wouldnt it!

Companies and their zero tolerance policies are stupid. If I ran a company and one of my employees did something like this or some other similar deed, and I would milk the shite out of it. Have a Dillon Reagan Day with a BBQ, music, and drinks for employees and customers, tell people about how we hire only the best type of people to work for us, etc.

While policies like this are stupid, the right decision resulted.

Companies like HD have stupid bureaucratic policies and it's probably not easy for one person or committee to make an exception. I doubt the people involved in the original decision were gunning for his job, I just suspect they were constrained by company policy.

Glad someone with authority ultimately decided to change the outcome.

For doing what? Walking off the premises while he was supposed to be closing down for the day? He prevented nothing and did nothing that the other woman couldn't have done while off the clock.

This is the problem with this country now, the guy didn't witness shite and the woman probably didn't either, just got their noses in everyone's shite. The first day I met one of my neighbors at an old apartment complex, she told me about how her boyfriend beat her. She wanted me to jump the guy and beat his arse because she was mad at him. I told her if he did she should just call the cops but she wouldn't.

The woman was probably out there hysterical yelling about how the guy did this and did that and the female employee probably heard her and then drug this guy in with it. They should have called the cops, especially if the guy was just walking away.
