Dorms freshman year is a requirement here at UNL too.
And yea you're right it is a great way to meet new people, the worst part was an entire floor of guys all sharing one bathroom. Got pretty nasty.

I had those my freshman year, I was mostly referring to guys who would piss all over without aiming and the ones who would miss when they are puking.
My roommate my freshman year was a weirdo too. Dude was gay, never went out ever, and was always in the middle of waking off when I came in to my room.

My bathroom in Herget had this one shower that had no hot water. Was literally freezing.
I used it every time in the mornings so I wouldn't have to wait in a line. I still take cold showers to this day.

Freshman & Sophomores living on campus have to get meal plans.
Add that to the dorm rates and its just north of $5,000 a semester to live in the dorm.
Appartments are cheaper but they lose the sense of community and rapport you will build in the dorm around the people you will be spending the next 4-6 years

On campus life your freshman year is worth staying in a shitty dorm. I was in Kirby Smith in the early 2000s and admit it was awful. Luckily I was in a fraternity and got to know a lot of people in Herget/McVoy/Miller and realized there are nice areas to live. And when I say nice, I mean you are around friends and girls. Not that the dorm itself is nice. I've heard Kirby is better now. The one thing I'd avoid is an all male dorm with no girls close. 18 yo boys will live like heathens pissing in elevators and shitting in the hallway without the need to keep up appearances for girls.

Are you a guy? Check out Club Middleton. 4th floor. You'll thank me later.

West side is best side. Stay in the Pentagon baw. No front desk means you can do absolutely anything you want without getting caught.

I lived in Kirby Smith. One night I got on the elevator and there was just a cardboard box with a live chicken chilling on the floor. Good times.

I believe it! Also the Pentagon cafeteria (I think it's called the 5 now) was way better than the Highland cafeteria. All of the athletes eat at the Pentagon so we always had the best food.

Avoid Herget and the Pentagon.
I'm with Kingbob. Most of the residential college dorms are new/nice. I would avoid the pentagon like the plague.

Back in my day, Herget was for chicks. Laville was for smart kids. And Kirby Smith was immaculate.

Doing my username's due diligence and dropping in to give you my recommendation.

3rd floor? They have about 5 showers, 3 didn't work, one was only cold water.
I lived in Herget my freshman year too. Voted the 11th worst dorm in America that year by some magazine. One of the best decisions of my life to live there. If you're not looking to be a screw up, try to not live on the 5th floor

Stay in the residential college dorms. I stayed in the Engineering Dorms, which were brand new. The Pentagon has had major renovations too so I hear it's not too bad.
I haven't been to the dining halls in a while but I don't think there's much difference between The 5 (Pentagon) and 459 (Renovated old Laville Dining Hall). Sorry that you'll never get to experience Highland Dining hall. The best place to eat on campus not counting the Faculty Club is the Magnolia Room on the 3rd floor of the union. You can't use regular meal credits there though.

Dorms are necessary for Freshman year.
This is a grey area. I've heard that incoming freshmen "have to" live in a dorm. Yet, I've seen cases of people living at home (BR, DS, PA) or off campus when they were freshmen. I lived off campus my freshmen year, but this "you have to stay in a dorm" business didn't exist then. I'd look further into it. Not saying dorms suck, just wondering if its just a way for the university to secure $$$.
