No chance at playing drums freshman year. Best hope is to hold cymbals on the off chance you make it.
This is why I chose to say frick marching and just played kit after high school. I did all state marching band on snare and quads and that was enough of a taste to turn me off to college band. The only reason I'm happy I marched was using the rudiments to make fills and grooves. Otherwise being a drummer in a marching band sucks a-hole even before they make you hold cymbals like a puss.
ETA: I had an ex Drum Corps instructor who tried to get me to go to corps or a a major university. I learned quick that marching and the people within it are not the type of people I wanted to associate with.
My advice would be to get a drum kit and start doing something you can do forever instead of something you'll be stressed about for 4 years and then never use again forever. No one is ever looking for a quad player to sit in on a wednesday night.

Should have played a brass instrument
A decent French Horn player can get a scholarship anywhere in the country.

Walk up to the band director and scream STTDB in his/her face.

Band at the high school level gets a lot of shite but those kids put in work.
Yes, marching around 8-to-5 at 120 BPM is taxing for a fat clarinet player.

More work than any of the athletic teams.
Hah! No they don’t.

If it's anything at all like the Ohio State marching band it is extremely competitive. The drummer had better be damned good.

More difficult than playing tuba.

Also, has anyone received a scholarship from band, other than the automatic $1,000.
Yes. I had a 4-year full ride.
ETA: Looks to still be a thing as of 2016 at least. Advocate link.

LSU allocates $325,000 — $1,000 stipends to all members of the LSU band — and $70,000 in scholarships aimed at attracting “blue chip” instrumentalists.

I’ve always heard you have to be selected for another instrument before you could try out for drum line.

I can play most of the brass instruments and by far the French Horn is the hardest(technically) for me to play.

Can you play and read music?
I played tenors “quints” at Southeastern in the 80’s under Will Rapp, a nationally know percussionist. He was pretty demanding guy. We blew away LSU’s line back then…

I was in the drum line in high school, and 4 years in LSU drumline, and I can assure you this is not the case at all.

LSU Band...How difficult is it to make the drum line?
I knew kids that went to school with my kids that were highly awarded HS band members and very few made TGBFTL. So from that I will at least say it is not easy.
