It does seem to make sense. Just curious, what is your age?

It could be an issue caused/exacerbated by poor posture. It could be weight issues (if you are overweight). Steroid injections can help, but it's not a permanent fix. Strengthening the muscles in your back can help support the spine, thus decreasing the stress on your discs. PT should be able to help with that if you are dedicated.

If it is a facet joint issue, you could look into what is called a Rhizotomy where the doctor goes in an essentially burns/kills the nerve root that is causing pain (outpatient procedure) A fusion surgery is always probably the last option. IMO, I would try PT to see if that helps and maybe focus on your posture and activities.

I have had poor posture my entire life, my dad has it as did his dad so I have learned that bad habit unfortunately. Overweight is not an issue as I'm 6'-0" 160. I am going to be completely committed to PT and I am trying to learn as much as I can to be able to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

My mom had degenerative disc disease. She 3 back surgeries including a fusion and diskectomy. She suffered from severe chronic pain for over 10 years until cancer took her last year. She said surgery was not the right decision but she just wanted some relief. Good luck to you.

I'm in the same boat. Just got my X-ray results and it shows disc height plus some signs of arthritis. Im having an MRI in two weeks to see how bad it is. This shite really sucks.

This is interesting because it is the complete opposite of what every medical professional has told me

I very strongly encourage you to read up on and listen to the Barbell Medicine guys. Both are MDs, and they are pretty vocal about the bad advice doctors give about this sort of stuff.

My PT has me flexing my core with a inflatable ball on my stomach and it sometimes it just seems like I can't be getting that much strength out of this to support half of my body weight. But they are the professionals that treat this stuff daily.

Yeah but.

There are 80 year old women squatting and deadlifting.
Obviously I don’t know your exact situation, but it would have to be really bad if you can’t train and get stronger.

Start taking Omega-3 fish oils. The lubricity you will gain from them will work wonders.

Also look up the yoga stretches for your back. Keep those muscles strong and your hamstrings LOOSE...

You will stay out of binding a lot more and help your nerves

I hate to hear that, I hope your results come back okay. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

I have it and have had 2 discectomies. But the 2nd one was 15 years ago and I have been great since. And really, the 2nd one was caused by by bullheadedness lifting something very heavy and moving it up some stairs bent forward....I'm still dumb but really try not to be now. I rarely have any back issues now. I swim and ride my bike to keep in shape and up until a couple of years ago was still running. Only reason I have not run is my knee was giving me problems. My advice is to keep active, strengthen your core and learn good posture.

So PT vs chiropractic treatment? Anyone have results with strictly chiropractic sessions?

This is the National Institute of Health back pain fact site, it is a good place to self educate about back pain.
