Will they require that I have a fenced in backyard?

Yep, that is why I am ok with the lengthy process some rescues do to make sure they get the right family. It's more about the dog finding a good home instead of the people getting a new toy.

Depends on the rescue, the more strict ones will without a doubt require it.

There are a number of factors... ours included the fact that our dog might be left over 10 hrs alone. The breed mix and activeness plays a big role too. Basically our requirements came from the foster parents saying the dog needs this, this and this but is ok with that, that and that. They match you to a dog that they have quite a bit of info on.
For us, I wanted an active dog to run with and play fetch. Mrs wanted a lap dog. Neither of us wanted puppy training, chewing furniture, aggresion towards kids or other animals or a large dog (lots of food & lots of poop). Our little guy is about 23lbs, smaller than I originally wanted, but he is one of the coolest small dogs you will ever meet and I attribute the find to CAAWS working with us.

GeeOH, if you do decide to part with her, let me know. I've been looking at getting one for a little while now. J.PetermanTD on the gmail

I found a lady who is getting rid of some boston terrier/lab puppies. The mom was terrier and the dad was lab. I know labs are great dogs, anyone have experience with boston terriers?

Just remember, you're not really adopting it for her.

Get the girl a Doberman pup

It's going to be a family pet. I am going look at the puppies this afternoon and we should be taking one home with us today.

Petsmart on the weekends has dogs and cats to adopt. I think it's the CAAWS organization that puts it on

I started a thread about a dog I need to find a home for this morning and I think it was deleted?? Anyway this is not a small dog, just wanted a place to rant.
BTW I think a beagle is a very sweet natured dog and not too big.

Toy Poodle. We have one and she's a great dog. They're small so they don't need much space, don't eat alot and make good pets. Especially for kids though; my nephew comes over and they get along great. Just get them groomed every now and them. Say every 6 weeks or so. They don't even get to be over 8 pounds. Seriously.
We paid $600 for ours but hell that's turning out to be one of the best $600 I ever spent. Get her one of those and she won't regret it. Also, they like to stay in your lap and sleep with. Mines is a couch potato and loves to watch TV on the couch

You can go toy poodle, you can go beagle, you have plenty of options. But when looking for a god, be aware of what they're going to cost you in food, housing etc.
And I really hate to bring this up, but please don't be the guy who is looking for a family dog and ends up getting a pit because it looked "sweet, harmless, and adorable". We don't need another one of those threads around here.
Whatever route you go, good luck with them.

Not an option at all. I grew up with pit bulls and never had a problem, but people have breeded the good out of them to where now, you never know what you will get. It could be sweet and harmless for most of it's life and just turn one day. I would never put my family at risk like that.

When I was in B.R., I got my first dog from the Ascension Parish Animal Shelter. I went just to look and was thinking about getting a dog. I left with one, minimal paperwork. It was like $50 and I got free vouchers for neutering from the vet. He was an awesome dog and lived to be almost 12.

dont get a dog without a fenced in yard. your life will be sooo much harder without a fence on that yard.

I had a running total in my head on how much I spent on mine when I got him. The number got too high I had to quit thinking about it.
That said, I feel like it's money well spent. I love the little guy.
