Anyone know the best route to take to do this? I have never adopted a pet before, we always had hunting dogs growing up. Do you just call the local animal shelters and set up an appointment to fill out the paper work? Can I bring my daughter to pick the one she wants? Anything around Baton Rouge will work. TIA

Got our new family member today. My daughter couldn't be happier. Meet Jax

Usually you just walk in and pick one out. Got a few from here in Metairie.

ARNO has a great no kill shelter, but there are so many shelters out there.

Just go to the shelters and see if she likes any. Make sure you play with them a good bit to see what kind of personality they have.

go to shelter without her first, see if there's any you deem acceptable... then take her back if so.

I don't know about BR, but in Lafayette, you can just show up and pick one out. But they also have pet adoption advertisements almost daily via KATC and KLFY. I wish I had the room, there are a lot of neat dogs I know would enjoy living at my house. But I have two small heathens as it is.

I adopted mine from Companion Animal Alliance, they work out of the shelter up by the airport. Easy experience, I don't even think you need to set up an appointment. And yes you can bring her to pick out the one she wants.

It was about $60, including fixing the dog.

If you are honestly trying to get a small dog for your daughter, stay away from Pomeranians. They're a great dog and all, except the dog chooses one person to become attached to, and can be violent to other people besides that person. I bought one when I was a teen, it chose my Dad. I tried to pick it up out of his lap and it bit me. Now, if you can spend the time to take your whole family out to look at dogs, and you find a Pom that takes up with your daughter in the face of everyone else you might be alright.

Why a small dog? I love small dogs but they often aren't good with kids. How old is your girl?

If she is your girl? You might want to consider getting a lab mix. Labs are great with kids.

Haven't been there but I saw that there is a nice looking dog adoption place on Highland right before you get to Starring Lane and across from Sammy's.

It is right next to the old cemetery on Highland and across the street from Magnolia Woods subdivision.

I would start there before going to the pound.

Check Friends of the Animals. They are at Perkins Rowe every Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 3.

I'm not selling it genius. I put that to show it's value and bloodline quality. We would not sell it, we would only give to someone who we KNOW would be a good fit and take care of it like we do. We love the dog, it's not a commodity to us!
