Looking for some Non-French quarter New Orleans advice [update pg2]

Taking the wife and kid to New Orleans this weekend. Sunday night we're staying by the Saint Hotel by the Saenger theater. Reason for the trip is we suprised the kiddo with tickets to meet his favorite YouTube star (DanTDM) on Sunday. Sunday and Monday will be spent in the French Quarter area around the theater.
Saturday I was hoping to see some parts of the city outside of the French Quarter. I've only really visited the French Quarter and I'm sure there more great parts to the city outside of that one area. I realize Jazz Fest and the PGA are in town but those aren't on the to do list. I'd love to get some advice on good places to stay, eat, or visit outside of the French Quarter. Hopefully in an area of the city I won't get stabbed and shot. I'm perfectly OK with a non-violent mugging but I cross the line and stabbings and shootings so hopefully that opens up more of the city.

I would recommend taking the street car uptown and having lunch and walking around on magazine street.
You can take street car to the end and back uptown for cheap and you see a lot of nice old houses. You can also do a self guided garden district tour.
If you like museums the ww2 museum is really nice and it has a children's museum and some nice art galleries near it.
You can also take a street car to city park and rent a surrey bike or a paddle boat.
The zoo is pretty nice as well.

tickets to meet his favorite YouTube star
So these kids who upload videos of themselves on Youtube that get enough followers or viewers are now selling tickets to meet them?

City Park. There's a miniature golf place there with two 18 hole courses, Carousel Garden (small amusement park with kiddie rides), Morning Call coffee shop, and lots of places to just picnic.

How old is your kid?
To reiterate what others have already said, City Park is nice. Pick up some food and go out and have a picnic.
The zoo is always fun, and you can couple that with checking out the Uptown area. Plenty of great food choices around there.
Fun fact you can bring your own ice chest into the zoo with whatever food and booze you want for free.

I would do the uptown deal like Napoleon said. Also, wear your shades because there will be some fine looking women walking around town this weekend

It's going to be crowded with Jazz Fest. Walk around the Garden District, Magazine Street, and Audubon Park and Zoo.
You should also check out City Park as well.

Be aware that the part of Canal Street by the Saenger and parts of the FQ directly behind it are NOT the safest. Stick to Canal, take the streetcars and you should be OK.

The Zoo
Shops on Magazine St
Aquarium of Americas
Museum of Art (city park)
City Park (storyland)
If you play golf, the new course at City Park just opened and I hear its awesome.
Food:
Mais Arepas
Clair's Pour House
Santa Fe (Esplanade)or Lola's right across the street but the traffic may be bad for Jazz Fest.
Bennachin
Mandinas
R&O's

My kid loves DanTDM. Wish I had know he was coming - I would have done the same thing.

With a kid, take them to the Children's Museum in the Warehouse District, The Audubon Zoo and lunch at Dat Dog in the 3300 Block of Magazine. Should be safe in those spots and out of the way of monument removal.

For your kid:
WWII Museum, Aquarium, The Zoo, Insectarium

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority or RTA has an app, and you can pay for and have Street Car passes or "Jazzy Passes" on your phone and not have to unload a shitload of change to get the family on. The drivers are helpful in getting you to the right screen, too.
I agree park and museums, zoo and aquarium will likely have heavy traffic this weekend.

Is Dat Dog actually pretty good?

Take the streetcar down to Audubon Park and walk to the zoo and/or the fly. Then get him a freeze at Camilia Grill.

If you don't have a place to stay on Saturday night, I suggest you get on that right away and the choices could be slim with so much going on in the city.
Along with other suggestions of things to do with your child, you may want to look up the hours of operation and days open for the Children's Museum.
Food Board can suggestion places to eat with more information from you about what you're looking for. Many places will be packed, but you may be able to eat early.
