My son is looking to maybe join one so just trying to get some info on how it all works(and I understand some do not like them and will say don't join, I get it). For those who have been in one at LSU or had a kid in one, can you give me some scoop on how it works as far as rush goes and how do they offer you spots, the process etc.? Also what is the typical cost to join if you are not living in the house and other costs during the year(trying to get an overall cost for a semester or year). Also which ones would you recommend or not recommend?

this will end poorly for you. The rush will end even worse for your son.

You sign up for rush. During rush you get in groups of 20 or so and visit all the houses. After this you narrow down your choices. The fraternities also narrow down their lists. Then you go back to the ones where you've "matched." Then you either get a bid from those or you don't. Then you pick your choice, on bid day.

This varies wildly. You'll probably at least have to buy a dinner meal plan - his LSU meal plan will transfer over to defer the costs. Figure around $1k/semester.

Leave this entirely to your son. Don't listen to anyone here or anywhere else. The quality of the fraternity depends on its current members, just like the LSU football team. A great fraternity one year could be absolutely awful a few years later.

Does he have any older friends already in one? Cost will be 1000 or more a semester. I graduated 3 years ago but the good ones were Kappa sig, KA, Acacia, Sigma Nu, Lambda Chi, Sigma Chi and Sig Ep i think.

I was in a fraternity at LSU in the early to mid 90's. While I am sure the fraternities have changed over the years, tell your son to give rush a try. If he doesn't get a bid from a fraternity he likes, tell him to not just join any one that gives him a bid.

I had a blast, made lifelong friends, and don't regret it to this day.

They change, so it's hard to say at what's a good place or not for your son if you are a few years out of it. Rush for guys isn't that bad. First round is shaking hands and houses basically culling anyone that they don't think woul fit in from first impressions. Second round you get to know them a little more and they'll make any cuts there. Usually by the third round, you are picking which place you really want to be and at least with us, you had a 75%+ chance of getting a bid if you made 3rd round. After each round you list the places you like and the fraternity says yes or no to you. You go back to the houses you match. Last day you rank in order and you get the highest one on the list that kept you.

Paid about 1200 a semester, but that was 3 meals a day, parties, etc. living in the house brought that up to a total of around 2,200. Was cheaper than getting an apartment and paying for food. Outside costs were t-shirts and like $50 for formal or something. Most everything is covered in dues.

People will have their opinion and say it's buying friends. Most pretty much have people that know the person before they give the bid, so you're already friends with the people. You just pay for the cool shite and get to know more people. I highly recommend it

I'd recommend him to go in with an open mind, and decide which group of guys he would most like to hang out with for the next 4 years of his life.

Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Let your son make his own friends, don't pay for them.

Good to know we are still doing ok. I got some emails a few years ago about drugs being a problem which is bizarre because we kicked people out for doing drugs when I was a member......

the soreness from the buttsex goes away after a few months, but the friendships last forever.
