Looking at a potential relocation from South La to Jacksonville…. It’s been several years since I’ve spent any time there. What can y’all tell me about the city, what areas to look and what areas to avoid.

Ponte Vedra always seemed like a dream to live there

It’s an upgrade, but that isn’t saying much

If you have kids St Johns county has great schools. Duval not so much. Housing prices have really taken off last couple of years. Jacksonville seems to have most of the amenities of a good size city plus plenty of outdoors activities. St Augustine is nearby which is a plus. People complain about traffic but it seems alright to me. It's nothing compared to other places I've been including much smaller towns.

I retired here as it’s my wife’s hometown. Jacksonville proper kinda sucks in my opinion. Downtown is dead. Riverside area has awesome restaurants and bar scene with cool historic homes but no good schools nearby. St. John’s is the hot new area with big cookie cutter subdivisions and good schools. Fernandina Beach is great if you’re old and like to golf. The beach communities are really nice with Atlantic Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach being the nicest although I think Ponte Vedra is boring and pretentious. Jax Beach and Neptune Beach are nice and where we chose only because Atlantic Beach has limited inventory and expensive for what you get. Good schools in the beach communities but land is scarce so homes are close together. Street legal golf carts really make living here more enjoyable and I rarely leave the beach. The area you choose really depends on your lifestyle.

I grew up in Orange Park, which borders Jax to the south. I hate town, but return 5 days a week for work lol. My mom stays in Fleming Island, dad is in Nocatee, and my brothers are out in Atlantic and Jax Beaches. I personally prefer the quiet afforded living way out in the sticks, 30-40 miles away. Traffic does suck a bag of dicks, regardless of what folks are trying to tell you. It's a byproduct of being the largest city in land size in the contiguous 48.
That last fact unfortunately should be a factor in what area you're really looking at. What exactly is drawing you to the 904 area? It could get you slightly better answers.

quote:My son lives in St. Augustine and he's looking at buying a house. He said the closer you get to Jacksonville the prices get outrageous for obvious reasons. St. Augustine is only 40 miles from Jacksonville and house prices are way cheaper.
St Augustine is nearby which is a plus

Bigger than Houston? That sounds impossible.

I’d say as long as it’s got tons of hotties, and Chick Fil A……..it’s a go.

It does sound impossible, but it’s true that it’s the “largest city by area” in the continuous 48.
I lived in Orange Park between 2010-2016. “Moving to Jacksonville” can be absolutely totally different things depending on if you’re moving somewhere close to the Navy base (Orange Park) or if you’re closer to Old Kings Road/Mocrief, Mandarin, if you wanna live in Atlantic Beach, which I think most new-comers would consider Jax/Jax Beach, at first.
The neighborhoods are pretty far apart, and they all have a different vibe. You should visit before you move bc it’s s very spread-out city. Also, there are a ton of crosswalk/pedestrian accidents, for various reasons. Look both ways, then run across but be ready to Luke Duke it, should you need to.

Houston is only 671.67 sq mi, Jacksonville is 874.46 sq mi. Not only is it possible, but it's fricking 30% larger

I live at the beaches. I love it here on this area of town. Pretty much anything you want to do you can do here. As others said I don’t really go downtown other then a few times a year for things other then a business meeting or lunch.
Really depends on where you are going to be working in regards to where you should love. Driving can be quite the undertaking of going across to the other side of the river.
Great public schools in St, John’s.
Great private schools in Jville if you want that.
More golf than you have ever seen. Very easy access to on shore and off shore fishing.
NFL franchise
Great local restaurants if you know where to go.
