They just got a raise in 2021. A starting teacher there makes 45K. That’s pretty good for 6 months of work a year and 7.5 hour days.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted here. I guess they do put in 8 hours a day.

Eh, people move because of demographics more than “school scores” imo

Exactly. You could take the entire student body of Mandeville and Belaire in BR and flip them and the scores would flip A to F right along with it.

Ultimately the PARENTS determine the quality of the school.

FWIW, this proposed tax increase was about as poorly-timed as it could possibly have been. Middle and lower class families are seeing their paycheck cover less and less with rising prices and an ongoing recession. Even folks who would have otherwise supported the principle of more funding to keep and enhance an overall good educational system in LP could not get past this ballot initiative which would put a new sales tax in place for the foreseeable future--with sales tax rates going well over 10% for the first time ever here.

I’m not sure either. Even at an 8 hour day that’s still $43 an hour. Pretty good living if you ask me.

So did all neighboring districts. Which makes recruiting and retaining quality instruction increasingly difficult.

Amen. Ouachita Parish is rife with them as well. And they trick em out to look aggressive as frick which to me is the opposite of the attitude we want emanating from our law enforcement. They’re supposed to serve and protect but the feeling you get is they’re at war with us.

More like forever. Taxes like this are almost never repealed or reduced.

Let them go to BR or Hammond... they'll be back soon enough. A bump in pay isn't worth dealing with students who will fight you in class.

If you proposed a 1% tax to help a select business they'd probably pass it though.

It’s simple math. Add up the summer months along with all the holidays they get. It’s comes to around 6 months.

If they getting police equipped Tahoe for 36K, whoever negotiated that deserves a raise.

This is factually true but it doesn't mean that we can't take pride on our communities and pay teachers well.

I'm not saying we have to. I'm saying the philosophy behind it isn't being done justice by reducing it to what is necessary and what isn't.

Government spends our tax money on stupid shite, then claim that we need higher taxes for teachers, police and firefighters. The truth is they already have the tax revenue to give those groups adequate pay.

Well, if GRT's post is accurate than we pay 50% more for EBR students than LP. What is the right amount? Because there doesn't seem to be a positive correlation between funding and results.

Do I need to provide links? It’s easily google-able.

When I started at EBR library -the starting pay for a librarian (masters degree required) was $36,000 - to be a librarian in EBR public schools (no masters degree required - just a certificate - which I have, too) starting pay was $47,000

I went to the public library
