But if Livingston parish wants to keep good teachers, the people should’ve voted for the raises - or taxes need to reallotted so they could get a raise

Good teachers won’t be making a mass exodus from Livingston schools. You know why? Demographics. I’m sure they’d much rather work in the LP than an urban area where they might make a buck or 2 more an hour.

Why you should give a shite:
1. Not everyone can afford private school
2. Not everyone could pass private school
3. Some students have special needs
4. Public schools (try) educate everyone
5. EVERYONE deserves an education
6. EVERYONE should be responsible
7. Teachers have to teach ALL students
The zoo keepers you reference are trying to keep the community from becoming a real jungle so your son can live in a peaceful prosperous society! That is why you should give a shite!

really you think that's a good living?

I don't make much more than that hourly and my wife makes less than half of what I make. No government assistance. We're doing just fine.

I can break down my monthly budget if you'd like.

If they want a raise, maybe they should work more than half a year.

Per the Parish district calendar, Teachers work from the first week of August through the end of May. They aren’t simple 7-8 hour days. 6:30am -4:30pm is more accurate and then many still have papers/tests to grade at home. Lesson planning eats into your schedule as well. Pretty much every school goads you into being involved in extracurricular activities, so that leads to more time on campus. Teaching is an art and it takes a special personality to be good at it. These people work their asses off and deal with tons of behavioral issues.

It’s a very basic concept that we should be investing as much as possible into educating our children, so our society in general can benefit long term. But somehow 1% is , too much? Sad and pathetic.

And demographics in Central and Zachary are about to trend worse than LP

I hope not for them.

The west side of LP has been trending the wrong way demographically for a while, and it’s moving East fast.

The state told me that all all of the proceeds from the casinos would be fixing Louisiana's education problems when it passed many years ago. Where did that money go?

Should have failed. Livingston folks pay the highest local taxes compared to neighboring parishes.
The sheriffs office is also asking for donations while not indicating what donations will fund.
When I first moved here I remember the parish and DS trying to double bill FEMA for hurricane clean-up; that says it all.

Don’t be deceptive, it’s not 1%, it’s ANOTHER 1%.

Maybe the Sheriff's office can quit buying $40,000 Tahoes

I have some bad news. A new Tahoe PPV is probably closer to $100k, fully outfitted for fire or police.

I have no dog in this fight, but why can't the parish re-balance their budget to provide this 1%?

Never in my life will I vote in favor of a tax. Ever. Government officials should balance their budgets just like the working class has to.

They can. That’s the point most are missing. The money is there already. Tax assessor does a terrible job. Many properties have not been reassessed in years. The solution should be what you’ve suggested not fleece the taxpayers for another 1% (it’s not 1¢ as has been previously mentioned in this thread) over the next 20 years. We already have one of the highest sales tax rates in the country, the economy is going the wrong direction, and the idiots that are currently in office chose this as the route to to try and make up for their shortcomings.

Anyone in LP that’s upset about this not passing, please attend a school board and parish council meeting, and see what your elected officials are up to. I’d say it’s comical, but they’re making significant decisions in those rooms.

Lafourche on the other hand did pass their Tax swap, so their Tax Neutral swap will cost me more than 16 dollars more per month since I am homestead exempt through a new fee for garage service.

The scam in the tax swap was that if you paid property tax you would see some savings there, but where I live sales tax stays the same, no change in property taxes since I am homestead exempt, but now I get pleasure of paying 16-20 dollars a month for garbage garbage service since the rate hasn’t been set yet.

I say if you can’t beat them it may be time to join them, with starting pay for teachers reaching near 50k a year and a few more state enhancements coming soon, I can retire in 20 years, and collect part of the social security I have already earned. Plus summers off, 5 weeks vacation during the school year. And depending on the school district, a decent low cost insurance plan.
