For example Europa or another moon of Jupiter.

Because Jupiter would radiate our balls off and terraforming that far out is an impossibility. And with Europa, the ice sheet is thicker than Mount Everest, so good luck getting through.

reactionless Cannea Drive

Very, very cool stuff.
Seems like a 50/50 shot on whether it works or not though.
If it does it'll change the way we look at Newtonian physics.

I am curious what comes out of McCulloch's theory about the Unruh Effect and Unruh radiation.
Which, if proven could disprove the EM Drive.

I have my finger crossed

I won't even pretend to know wtf that means. High level math and theoretical physics is beyond my comprehension.

If such atmospheric control is expected in the future, why is global warming such a big deal. Wouldn't we be able to "terraform" our own planet?

Wouldn't be sending any back from there.

The asteroid belt maybe, less energy needed to get it there.

But my main point to that was just "Why does this discussion always lead to Mars?"

Because it's the most feasible. Sure we can have a Moon Base, but there's no way that can support a human long term. Just a few month stint before returning to Earth.

People talk about Venus, but it requires far more advance technology to terraform it than to terraform Mars. We have to clear out trillions of tons of horrible gas, somehow have to stabilize the planet, and then make the planet spin much faster due to the fact that a day literally lasts longer than a year.

Mercury has no atmosphere and is too close to the Sun. Any Moon of Jupiter and Saturn you'd get fried by radiation quickly. The Gallian Moons also have unstable surfaces, Io is a volcanic hell hole, Titan has lakes of gasoline, and the Ice Giants are way too far out for us to visit anytime soon, nevertheless colonize them.

McCulloch’s new theory deals with the unconfirmed concept of Unruh radiation, which infers that particles form out of the vacuum of space as a direct result from the observed heating of the universe due to acceleration. This theoretical concept largely fits into our current understanding of the universe and predicts the results of inertia we currently observe, albeit with one notable exception: small accelerations on the scale of about what has been observed while testing the EM Drive. This acceleration comes as a result of the Unruh radiation particles, whose wavelengths increase as acceleration decreases. Unruh particles at different wavelengths would have to fit at either end of the EM Drive’s cone, and as they bounce around inside the cone, their inertia would change as well, which would ultimately result in thrust.

Yea not the easiest to comprehend but i'll take their word for it
I didn't even bother reading this

The environmental/global warming one is not. Any environmental issues could be solved by "colonizing" the Earth and developing non-environment dependent societies, just as we would on Mars.

Well, I think we'll survive Global Warming, but it by no means makes it ok to say "frick the environment" because we'all probably have the technology to turn it around in a century or two. I would like to live in a world where I don't have to look at my children and grandchildren and explain why my and previous generations ruined it for them.

Because we already have the atmosphere we need. It's more difficult to remove toxic materials than it is to add them.

And by the way, when it comes to terraforming Mars, that's the point: Global Warming. We will intentionally put chemicals in the air to warm the planet as quickly as possible. We'd want Mars' atmosphere to hold in heat better than our own due to how far out it is.

Why travel millions of miles to do that?

Most efficient way to obtain both government grants and unquestioning adulation from Reddit neckbeards - a win/win for Musk.

No kidding, but the knowledge to do that has to come from somewhere.

You don't start off running marathons, you start by jogging for 5 minutes.

Elon Musk was asked on twitter how he survives on virtually no sleep. He responded with "large amounts of crack."

Smart guy VCU thought he was being serious.

This seems like an exaggeration, i know nobody knows for sure but do you really think it's MILLIONS of miles? Seems a little far.

That's not the plan. The plan is to control resources on Mars. If you are late to the party, you'll be S.O.L.

Because he's a visionary and incredibly intelligent. Sure, he's a bit nutty, but most intelligent people are.
