I think any veteran that cares about the labeling of other veterans is an attention whore. I may have joined for patriotic reasons but I served for the guys to my left and right. I don't care to ever be recognized by anything other than a brother to them.

Haven't read that part yet man! I have about 2 or 3 chapters left to finish.

This is a little off the subject but that reminds me of some of the comments in the other Memorial Day threads. A few guys have made comments about people not joining for the 'right reason' (pure patriotism).
IDGAF why you joined. You signed the same contract, took the same oath, and sit your arse in the same mud. So long as you serve with honor, it makes not a bit of difference what got you there. Hell, look at how many MoH recipients were conscripts who didn't even want to be there.
(this obviously isn't directed at C)

A Veteran is someone who served in the Armed Forces. It's not ambiguous, it's literal. If you want to subgroup it, say Combat Veteran. And you sound like a blast at the bars, I could only imagine your attitude in Oceanside.

Quite frankly if it was up to me (I'm I'm group 1) I wouldn't call anyone from categories 3&4 "veterans."
Interesting.
It is pretty sad that you would diminish contributions made by those who served in other capacities in the military yet never saw actual combat.
For every soldier in harms way there are many others that support that solder to keep them safe, supplies, trained and in battle ready condition.

I served but never deployed. I'd consider calling myself a veteran to be an insult to others.

IDGAF why you joined.

I don't necessarily agree with the stringency to which OP is placing on the term "veteran", but I do agree that we must be more conservative about its use. A soldier who gets chaptered out of the military for any reason while in basic training/AIT should not be considered a veteran. Soldiers who get pregnant or get some other "nondeployable health diagnosis" magically right before deployments should not be called veterans. The guy who self-enrolls in substance abuse counseling then intentionally drinks alcohol to get a quick chapter out of the army prior to a training exercise shouldn't be considered a veteran. I'll also lump soldiers who get DUIs into this category.
I appreciate 90% of the people that serve and sometimes soldiers don't have the opportunity to deploy. And you know what? That's fine, shite happens. However, 10% are scum who do more harm to their unit than good, wasting leaders' time and the government's money with their silly games.
All that being said, this is Memorial Day weekend not veterans day weekend. Let's focus on remembering those brave men and women who died in battle and in peacetime, regardless of MOS, fighting for our freedom.

A DUI nulls vet status? Nah.

Why not? People have to live with their decisions good and bad, every day. If you decide to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, you've made a very reckless decision that is not in keeping with the military. Furthermore, you willfully put innocent lives at risk.
Bottom line: being a veteran isn't something you do once and then leave without responsibility. There is a responsibility to maintain a certain standard of conduct. Getting a DUI is absolutely outside of that standard of conduct.

Because it's ridiculous. You believe that a DUI should erase someones service to their country?

I absolutely believe it should. Wouldn't most other crimes?

Yeah, it kind of is. Look it up, it's not something you can take away.

No. You could be a 'disgraced veteran', but you're still a veteran.
