Leasing allows the dealer to legally hide the true cost/price of the vehicle and charge you a higher price than you would normally agree to.

Which is why you would negotiate the price of the car before saying you want to lease it.

As opposed to the car you are making payments on and trade after three years?

Most people don't know to do this with a lease. They are more focused on the payment rather than the price of the vehicle which determines the payment.

I keep my vehicle(s) longer than three years.

Right, but that doesn't mean that leasing is inherently bad. People are just stupid.

I do too. I also drive way more than a lease would allow. Sometimes though, it is cheaper to lease and buy the car at the end of the lease.

If you do it right, you can easily come out ahead on a lease compared to the depreciation of a vehicle.

The majority of people don't know how leasing truly works.

They don't understand capitalized cost, capitalized cost reduction, acquisition fee, disposition fee, money factor or residual value.

All they're focused on is the payment (edited). That's it.

To an educated consumer, it's not hard to figure out why many car dealerships push leasing a vehicle rather than purchasing.

Lease no doubt. I've done both recently.

I'm in the same boat as you right now. My 2004 pacifica has been in two shops for the past 2 weeks with an electrical problem and I'm starting to think about either buying or leasing a new car/truck. I'm a grad student so I think I've only done about 6,000 miles/year for the past two years.

Anyone know of any good deals going on now for buying or leasing? Based on what's been said earlier in the thread, I'm assuming I should just get a lease for my remaining time here (roughly 2 years) since I don't drive all that much.

I thought you said earlier all they care about it is the payment? That is what you meant here, no?

Yes, I meant payment. Not price. I type too fast for my good.

I bought an Altima about 6 years ago, after financing it probably cost $23,000 total. I could probably sell it for around 8,000 now. I probably could've done 2 separate 36 month leases for around $15,000 and I would've gotten to upgrade after year 3.

You're not going to convince the the people here who love to crow about saving money while driving their six-year old F150 beaters.

And you'll always have a payment. Congrats?

Lease if you want a perpetual car note.

You will have equity in a paid off car, and in 5-6 years, it won't be in that bad of shape.

I've not seen a single instance where leasing made better financial sense, even in high-dollar German cars.

You pay more to rent something. That's just a basic financial truth.
