Since half the people are hazing the choice of granite in the other thread as passé, what would you put down for countertops for best resale in 5-10 years if redoing a kitchen now?

Quartz or poured concrete gets the most "oohs" on those HGTV shows.

Get a "decorator" involved and I'm sure they'll give you the latest chic options, just don't forget to add another 20K to a 20K job.
Good luck.

To me, concrete is more "early 2010's" than granite. I understand the wood butcher block island, but the whole kitchen?

Why the frick would I want to have my countertops be wood? There would be so much staining and if you actually used them as chopping blocks you'd have terrible looking counters. Yea you could replace them frequently or refinish them, but that would be a huge pain in the arse to constantly have people coming into your house to do that

Quartz is the hot thing now but so was corian 15 years ago. Both have a fake and synthetic look. Natural stone is timeless.

Granite. Wood will soak up everything and be scratched to hell and back.

Soapstone, quartz, marble, and travertine are all less "busy" and than granite and still a nice natural stone. Just depends on the look and price you are trying to achieve.

We just did ours in marble. I don't see that going out of style any time soon

IMO, a very nice looking 3cm granite is the perfect choice for looks, durability and resale. It's the go to countertop in homes in all price points. Don't use 2cm granite - looks cheap.
Carrara Marble can be found in a lot of upper end homes, but it's definitely not as durable as granite and a drop of water will black stain it (temporarily) if it's not sealed properly. It also has a contemporary look which would never fit in a rustic kitchen.
Concrete countertops went out in the early 2000's (thankfully).

you can't really see the difference when they hide the thickness with the edge, right?

Except you have a seam running across the entire length of the front of your counters.

Silestone. We had that in Baton Rouge. Was beautiful and easy to care for.

If you plan in selling in 5-10 years, I wouldn't put much money into it. There's no telling what the fad will be by then, and many buyers plan on changing things anyway.

Just did Quartz a few days ago with a marble look. No maintenance and nearly indestructible unlike marble.

What do you think the maintenance is with natural stone?

Do you even Europe?
Coffee Call has had marble counters for decades. That marble is still there.
