You and I know that. They don't. It is a really bad situation that adds financial stress to an even worse situation. I can't imagine losing my son and having to bury him. Yes, bad decisions are real, but tragedy is just terrible.

I still don't understand how money / financial management courses aren't taught to kids from k-12. It's such an integral part of American life but isn't taught in most curriculum. Some kids, mainly by the virtue of who they were born too, get that knowledge instill in them from the get go

I agree. You aren't an a-hole. You see stuff every day that molds your opinions. No one is special, we all deal with crap.

I agree. Just being able to balance a bank balance should be a requirement from getting out of 8th grade.

i have given money to a friend to buy christmas presents for her kids. i wouldn't do it again. i was much weaker back then, though

i do a very big annual christmas present charity thing, and it's a good thing it's done via schools b/c i will almost guarantee you if i saw the parents, i'd quit

I feel for the family, but also do not feel obligated to help pay for the burial.

Live within your means.

I see where you're coming from. The "GoFundMe" trend for every person that has difficulty or sob story is becoming a tired trend.

But do you react with the same harshness when you see a GoFundMe for a child's medical expenses?

its pretty fricked up that curriculum hasn't advanced since i was in school nearly 20 years ago. Stuff like Science and history should be electives, not mandatory.

teach kids how to build credit, balance funds, apply for jobs, buy a vehicle/house, help narrow down a future career path, stuff like that.

Medical expenses are the one thing that I don't mind donating for just because the health care system in this country blows. And that's a life and death situation.

This girl does not need a $15,000 burial. I'm sorry.

i feel like i'm taking crazy pills

we should give up actually educating kids in order to teach them life skills they should learn on their own?

You can get a term life policy on a child for less than $10 a month

I'm sure I could find room for that in their budget.

Enabling. I see your point. Doing the same for strangers means a lot more.

how many people learn this on their own? I dont know many.

most of the time a parent teaches them. Which even then can be limited, in comparison to someone who truly knows the ins and outs.
