Aaron Rose, 18, had recently graduated from high school in Texas and was on a missionary trip to Honduras with his family when he went missing. Rose's grandmother Shirley Heard said Rose had wanted to kayak out along the coast to see the sunset when he went missing Wednesday.

How in the world do you end up 18 miles offshore in a kayak? This guy is so incredibly lucky to be alive.

he went out too far, it got dark, and he got turned around and didn't know where land was?

that would be my guess

Reading the thread title, I came in here thinking he went missing in Texas and was found near Honduras.

it could happen, when I lived in Jupiter, FL(Palm Beach County) a guy that had fallen overboard on a fishing trip out of Tampa Bay washed up on our beach a few days later fully clothed, his wallet was still in his pants with everything in it, get caught in the gulfstream who knows where you might end up

Anybody who has ever been to orange would probably agree that being Salutatorian there is like being the smartest kid on the short bus. Being that he was in honduras he might have been on a ton of blow and felt invincible.

Yeah I guess that subject is kinda misleading. I copied the ABC news story. That would be amazing if he launched in texas.

I get that he got turned around and was probably going the wrong way. It just seemed like a dumb move to begin with, and he should be thanking sweet baby Jesus that he is alive.

I get that there are no landmarks in the ocean but you do have this thing is the sky called a sun.

The sun rises in one direction and sets in the other.

Start paddling in the direction that the place you left would be according to what way the sun moves.

Honestly, it isn't much of a stretch to think the salutatorian is the second most likely person to get lost, with the valedictorian leading the way.

it can get pretty disorienting out in blue water, even in broad daylight, but in a kayak at night that kid had no clue which way was up

You'd be surprised how far the wind can push you. Your body acts like a huge sail. 18 miles is a darn long way to paddle.
