One thing Katrina did was cure me of ever wanting a travel trailer. I lived in FEMA camper in my front yard for 8 months, with a pregnant wife, and frick THAT shite.

That had to be horrible.
Glad everything has worked out for you.

Unfortunately, no it didn't. Not even close.

Really? Says who? The media and numbers of dollars in damage?

The areas where both completely flooded and some areas looked like an atomic bomb hit and wiped the ground clean... Not as many people affected, i give you that. The affect to those that were are all the same

It's pretty awesome to watch the city come back. Neighborhoods are growing everywhere, we have a large influx of "young professionals", mid city is poised to be a great place over the next decade, it's great to be a part of the rebuilding process.

Yep, I think many people have the same attitude that you expressed in the first page. They overcame and are determined to live a much happier and fullfilled life.
This attitude change has led to so much good stuff.

Rita from the air was much worse than what I saw in New Orleans all the way down to Venice. And Empire got rocked pretty bad.

I was living in BR when Katrina hit. But all of my family, extended family and the magority of my friends lived in St Bernard. Thank god no one lost their lives, but everyone lost everything.

My parents house in Arabi was lifted off its foundation by the water and came to rest in the driveway when the water receaded. It had to be demolished. My parents who had about 5 years left on the mortgage lost everything except what they had in a suitcase and the freaking Christmas decorations in the attic. At 58 years old everything they owned was gone and now have a new 30 year mortgage. Kinda fricks up your retirement plans.

The grammer school I went to is now closed. St Louise Church was "our" church. It is now demolished, gone forever. The street I grew up on had probably 50 houses on it, now it has 5.

But its not really those things that get to me or my folks. Its not about the buildings its about the people. We are scattered everywhere. Hell I have not seen most of the neighbors I grew up with since 2005. Some of the eledrly ones have since died. Life long friends that lived 5 minutes away that you saw every Sunday at mass or in the grocery are now in Covington or Metairie or Lafayette. Sure we still get together but it now has to be planned. Thats tough. Alot of people just dont understand that.

So traumatized..NO!! Changed forever..YES!!

P, this thread made me want to check out some of the old stomping ground so I started google street viewing places and now I haz the sad.

Anyone with half a brain. Sheer number of people affected, not to mention the much bigger toll in economic disruption.

You're clearly only focused on a very personal level, and that's understandable. But surely you have to be capable of seeing a bigger picture. Maybe not though.

People seem to forget what Rita did to the other side of the state shortly after Katrina...The cities and towns affected were not New Orleans and the people there began to clean and fix up their own property and not wait for any handouts.... But no one talks about right? I personally had to rescue people by boat cause they were trapped in their homes.. It was not a pretty sight... Homes lost due to complete flooding just like New Orleans...but lot less media attention

My parents house in Arabi had 12 feet of water from Katrina. They pumped all the water out and started searching for bodies opening up all the houses. The house was flooded again by Rita with 4 feet of water. Letting alot of the stuff inside the house float down the street. We never took a single handout.

So frick you with your handout and no media coverage for Acadiana bull shite!!

I still have a hate for the way our area was portrayed.

Yeah, 1% couldn't find their arse with both hands while the rest of us got our act together, dealt with the devastation and moved on.

The NOPD was a national embarrassment; stealing cars and guns, when they didn't disappear. It's a shame b/c some of the hardest working officers were tarred with that brush.

Katrina Survivors: are you traumatized?

i lived in Memphis at the time of Katrina so i'm not even pretending to know how bad it must have been.

my family members from Bay St. Louis, (many that stayed with us as things settled down) most definitively were traumatized.

my cousin was a first responder. at the time he was a ms state trooper. he served in the marines during desert storm. he said all of horrible things he saw in desert storm didn't prepare him for what he had to do in the weeks following katrina in ocean springs and waveland. his own grandmothers house that survived Camille was completely gone. not even the concrete stairs were left behind.

Saw a recent episode of Hotel Impossible that involved a family hotel heavily damaged by the storm.

Yeah, not too long into it the family started showing the now telltale signs of post-disaster insanity, flying off the handle, making insane physical threats, irrational decisions, etc.

It was interesting watching from going through the same madness with Katrina. Probably a bad idea to do the show there but they were probably trying to help.

Only the OT can turn a "are you traumatized by Katrina" thread into a "we were impacted more" thread.
