I guess so. Many people consider their pets as part of the family. Doesn't mean they think of them as little humans, just means they are important to the family.

Considering some people spend $$$$ on hobbies such as golf, hunting, whatever...what's spending money to care for the animal you love?

If my dog was otherwise healthy and needed emergency surgery I would pay 2 grand for that.

^This.

I spent about $4K on surgery and care for my aging German Shepherds before they died. Don't regret it at all. They would greet me each evening with a tail wag and smile. The highlight at the end of each long day for me. No question I would do it again.

Go buy two cans of some soft dog food. Anything that said dog would woof down.
Had a Daschund that did this. Paid to have the first pantyhose removed surgically. Second time, told him you'll either shite it out or die! He passed it.

He probably would have passed it with a little difficulty. My black lab Kramer ate the neighbor kids sock right in front of the kids mom.

I told her I would get it back to her in a couple of days. When he passed it I brought it over to her. She didn't want it back.

Once he ate a needle and thread. He passed that through with no problem as well.

Once the vet bill exceeds the cost of a new dog, it's time for a new dog.

My old lab was notorious for eating random things:

Entire pack of cheese that my wife (gf at the time) left out....like the entire pack..main wrapper and individual wrappers included. He shite out cheese wrappers for a week.

1/2 Bottle of vodka (he chewed the cap off). We found him that morning passed out on the kitchen floor. I seriously thought he was dead for a second.

entire box of 40 chocolates on valentines day..wrappers included. It never even phased him. I guess the chocolate thing is a myth.

box of dryer sheets.

bottle of pain killers including the bottle. Forced peroxide down his throat for a solid 30 minutes when I got home...2nd time I thought he was dead.

That really sucks.

Once, my dog at the car keys and we had to hitchhike to the vet.

Could've just spent $30 on a shovel and fixed 2 problems at once. 1. Fix dog. 2. Bury dog.

Not a myth. Totally depends on size of dog, amount of chocolate ingested and type of chocolate.

Nice. He was a trooper for sure

I will never forget him squatting for 10 minutes to get the cheese wrapper out and him looking at me with a facial expression that screamed "please help me"

Having grown up with a dog in the house, having two after college, and sharing one with the ex (got it together, but it was hers) I can see how people grow attached and consider it part of the family. But at that price to fix up, I'd be hard pressed not to say my goodbyes and pick another one up. Having memories to hold on to are nice, but going through command learning, potty training, and other acclimations with a puppy to keep you busy, tend to make letting go, for lack of a better word, easier.

My first pug ate almost an entire grocery store bag. I remember him looking like he was in pain outside squatting. He had a bit of plastic sticking out of his bottom. I put gloves on and gently pulled....a pretty long length of plastic bag out of his butt.

Poor guy yelped pretty loudly when I did it as well.

Yeah, but he still ends up with a mismatched sock. At least for $2000 he got his other sock back.

One reason why I'm not sure if I'll ever get a dog. They eat the dumbest things.

Mine did it 3 times. Asked the vet if we could just put a zipper on there instead of sealing him back up

Talked to the surgeon earlier. He said that some of the elastic from the sock had loosened and moved into the intestines but was still attached to the sock in his stomach....so it was squeezing everything together. He had not eaten or drank any water since Friday. Doc said if I had not brought him in he'd be dead within 48 hours.

ETA: I'm not sorry for spending some money to save my dogs life

I really think Vets take advantage of people and their affection towards pets. As someone said, just let the damn thing throw it up or pass it.

I also think Dog Dentists are the biggest sketch balls. They're worse than Dermos wanting to cut into anything they see and charge you. I swear when I lived at home my mom would have to take our dog to the Dog Dentist and get some teeth pulled every other month and those things were expensive.
