I think armed robbery ranks out as a crime committed by "high commitment" criminals--people difficult to dissuade from criminal activity. They do hardcore crimes and don't really weigh the consequences because they [somehow] don't plan on being caught. If the 10 years+ he's probably looking at for taking a $150 register wasn't enough, I doubt 30 would have been.
Yes, but it takes guys like these out of the system where they can't commit anymore crimes and reproduce.

Putting someone in jail doesn't take them out of the system.

I'm guessing you meant it takes them out of the loop. But if he does live 30 years and gets out he will commit another crime because he knows nothing else. So maybe longer jail sentences aren't the magical answer. Maybe rehabilitation techniques should be tried.

Does your opinion change if the cash drawer was near $1000? Or let it go no matter what?

No. Every chain restaurant and convenience store carries theft insurance and has procedures to dissuade would-be robbers (like emptying the register when it has too much money in it. Filing an insurance claim is a lot easier than dealing with a lawsuit if your employee rights back and gets someone shot over a few bucks.

And if he commits another gun crime he goes back in for 50, thus spending his entire life in prison. You can't rehabilitate people that want to use violence as a means of intimidation and getting what they want. You can't just say "whoa is them" every time they commit an armed robbery or breaking and entering. I'm as empathetic as the next guy, but some of these guys don't even deserve empathy.
