This morning there are barricades surrounding it with about a 20 yard ring, and then directly surrounding the monument are giant dump trucks on all four sides. Multiple police.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Most people are not praising slave owners. I'm sure some are and the rest of us don't agree with them but you can't just knock down monuments and act like the shite never happened. It did and we need to remember it so it never happens again. Plus, not every single thing or person associated with the confederacy was racist. 9/11 happened too but are you going to tear down the memorial because it represents a tragedy and act like it never happened?

Mayor Landrieu had snipers up on the parking lot the other night when the Liberty Place Monument was removed.
This is what's astounding. The Mayor of New Orleans is willing to shoot and kill citizens in order to remove monuments. Let that sink in. The Mayor is willing to use his "power" to ORDER POLICE to shoot and kill people in order to remove a monument.
That totally beggars belief. And there's no recourse to oppose it. What a dictatorial tyranny this city has become.

If the plaques tell the full stories of their "horrific crimes" then the monuments become monuments praising tyrants. At the same time, just because some did horrible things, it doesn't mean those things were their lone purpose in life. The Civil War was not truly a battle for slavery. It was a battle for states' rights which happened to include slavery at the time. It's not like every single leader was Hitler. It was a fractured time in our history where friends fought friends and so on. The monuments should reflect this weird time, not condemn one side or the other.
