He traded one addiction (eating) for another addiction (fascination with kids). They say once you're an addict you can quit one thing, but you will replace the addiction with something else.

I do know that. A pedophile is a pedophile for life. I've read enough cases and interviewed enough of them to know that the majority had some type of contact with one when they were children and the cycle continues. They're not addicts that can actually benefit from support groups, therapy, etc. They are broken. Plain and simple.

Then they need to have help working through the issues that led to their condition. I don't believe anyone is permanently broken - with enough support and medical help, they can be fixed.

There is more and more evidence that the etiology is biological. It's pretty hard to fix.

If by medical help you mean chemical castration then yes. That's how you fix them. Once there is permanent damage to the brain it is nearly impossible to overcome. There may be rare cases out there of people that can do it but it's probably less than 1%.

1) CBT doesn't work.
2) A support group of other pedophiles is a bad idea for obvious reasons.
3) Here's a little note from a Harvard study. Half the battle is getting them to actually take their meds.
Drugs that suppress production of the male hormone testosterone are used to reduce the frequency or intensity of sexual desire. Although physical castration is another option, testosterone suppression offers advantages such as the need for follow-up visits (which aids in monitoring behavior). It may take three to 10 months for testosterone suppression to reduce sexual desire.
