People have protests and rallies on publicly funded spaces all the time that the majority doesn't agree with. Why shouldn't religious people be able to voice their beliefs on those same spaces?

That's their right. As a Christian, I wouldn't agree with it but I wouldn't let an 18 year old kid who has earned the right to give THEIR speech rustle my jimmies.
ETA: It's like that satanic monument being built for the courthouse in Oklahoma (?). If you're going to allow Christian monuments, you have to allow them all.

Ok, publicly funded events, not places.
And as far as I know, the freedom to assemble is afforded to religious entities, at gatherings in private or on public land so long as they do not obstruct. The freedom to assemble is not a right afforded to a group when a public event is transpiring.

I'm agnostic and I don't take him seriously.

You people keep acting as if taking an ideological position is somehow indicative of anger, or rustled jimmies. Sign of the times, I guess.
My brother gave his class address, he had to have it proofed by the Principal and Superintendent beforehand and he was explicitly told no religion, per school policy. That was in the early nineties.
The kids that do this now often lie, turning in a speech for review and then altering it to break the rules. I don't expect you to understand any of this.

I'm not here thinking they're angry, or rustled. I'm not repeatedly saying it either. They are. Childish. I'm here thinking that they believe it's fine to break rules as long as they agree with the outcome.
I'm sure they would love it if the speech was delivered with profanity, which is, of course, a subjectively reasoned concept. One mans damn is another man's count.

Clearly you haven't met our Gov. Jindal yet. Odd, b/c he spends lots of time up there in Iowa. Rhodes Scholar even.

Vacation = fun!
Bible = uhhh...not very fun, but for kids so maybe fun?
School = not fun
Pretty crappy thing to do to a child.

I don't live in Iowa, and I haven't for years.
Good for Bobby, he's a politician, so a liar by trade.
You won't find many Ivy League degreed people invoking a specific god in public discourse as if it means anything. Not that they aren't religious or can't be, they just know it does not belong. Politicians will use anything to boost their status.
Jindal likely does it in a state like LA simply because the folks that post in this thread, and their ilk, all love it and it garners votes, riles the base.

My parents would send us to the Summer bible camp at our grammar school because it was a way to get us out of the house.

To your second statement, rational discussion amongst differing opinions is not rustled jimmies, whatever that means. I'm sorry you can't understand this.
Your problem is that you aren't trying for rational discussion. You just want to bait people into arguing with you.
I feel sorry for people that are so uncomfortable in their skin they feel the need to go out of their way in a VBS thread to bash Christians. You don't even realize you are projecting. You need a mentor.
Philosophically atheists should be the happiest people on earth. It's amazing how on edge they are.
But please tell me how I should live my life some more.

This post is horrifically ignorant.
1. I'm not upset, and there is no bashing transpiring ITT, I simply don't think religion has any place in certain situations. The educated rulers of this nation agree, even the religious ones, by and large.
2. I'm not an Atheist. I can't be because I've never logically been told what I am supposed to be believing, therefore, I can't logically disbelieve. I am irreligious.
3. Live your life however you desire, I haven't tried to dictate lifestyle here. Just don't expect others to stand idle when some ignorant eighteen year old gets up and delivers a call to Jesus at a commencement ceremony.
4. What am I projecting here? We are just discussing opinion, quite peacefully.
5. I'm very happy, not at all on edge. Again, I'm just giving out opinions here. People don't seem to like that.
6. Threads take turns all the time, more than one discussion can be had. I think the course was relevant, as I don't believe it's responsible to expose kids to religion. If you want to make up their minds, by all means, you're the Parent.
