No...I'm a Louisiana native and LSU fan. She went to UF for undergrad and dental school.

My best friend here in Central Florida grew up in Baton Rouge and is an avid LSU fan and it rubbed off on me. I root for the tigers every weekend but one.

Not necessarily a scam but they're trying to get paid twice. It's like going into a doctor's office and once they find out you have good insurance, they order every frickin' test on the planet.

There's no such thing as good dental insurance.

When you go to the dentist, he, or she, will bill the insurance for the services rendered. Xrays, exam, and cleaning can only be billed so many times a year. Usually only once, maybe twice. If it takes one appointment or seven, only the service completed will be charged. You may need scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) due to not flossing. Sounds like this dentist is trying to give you the treatment that you need and not what the just what the insurance says you need.

We always had 3 general types of people when it comes to cleanings.
1) Normal non-trashy person who brushes on a regular basis and flosses at least on occasion - Just needs your typical scaling and polishing. One routine visit.
2) Person who hasn't had their teeth cleaned in years, but is only borderline on the trashy scale (i.e., no major perio problems but gobs of calculus) - Needs a gross debridement (bust out the cavitron and turn up the water because you're going to overheat that bitch) in the first visit, then come back in a couple weeks for a fine scale and polish.
3) Trashy person who hasn't had their teeth cleaned in 15 years (if ever), and brushes their teeth with a Hershey bar - First appointment is just to fuss at you and hand you some breath mints. Next two appointments are for root planing, 2 quadrants each appointment unless you're a glutton for punishment. Final appointment for fine scale and polish and to see if you listened to anything I yelled at you.

The dentist can't win here unless you are patient #1. If we schedule you for a checkup and a cleaning and you are anything but patient #1, you are going to claim we're "ripping you off" because we didn't clean your teeth when you came in for a cleaning. So some dentists won't schedule the cleaning until they've done an exam - in which case you still think you're being ripped off because we're "charging you for 2 visits."

I just saw this, sorry I was busy today over treating the general public we call patients.

911 has got it right so I can't really add much to what he said, but I will add this:

30% of the US population is completely edentulous by the age of 60. With some of the attitudes displayed in this thread , I'm shocked that this number isn't higher.

People actually spend more money on their hair and nails than they do on their teeth.

It used to be that dentistry was one of the top respected professions in America. It isn't anymore. I don't know why, but I will continue to practice dentistry in a way that brings respect to my profession and helps my patients maintain their teeth for their whole lives.

It's because many of your colleagues don't operate their businesses as you do.

I'm not sure if the OT will no what edentulous means. Google is smoking right now.

It may just be a scheduling thing. Then again they may do a lot of "deep cleaning" that costs a whole lot more.

Awesome dentist in Baton Rouge: Dr. H. Tran on Old Hammond Hwy right near Sharp Rd. Started seeing them this year after more than 10 year hiatus because I hate dentists. They were great!

a girlfriend of mine has been stuck with these kinds of patients for a few years now while trying to pay off her student loans. She has fallen into a deep depression because the patients yell at her and tell her they hate her like every day. One day someone called her a fatass bitch for not pulling their tooth. The person just walked in and demanded it be done right then and there, which she couldn't do without pissing off all the other patients who had been waiting.

50% of folks with dental insurance never step foot in a dental office during the year.

People refuse to take care of themselves even if they have coverage to help.

not me. I'm obsessed with teeth and go every 6 months. I will say, out of all the dentists I have used, the one I found when I first moved to Ridgeland is the only one who did all the Xrays and exams first, then scheduled me for a cleaning the next week.

This sometimes happens with VIP patients but shouldn't have in your case.

Wow, heads are going to roll! I would be willing to bet that you get a call tomorrow.

This is one of the problems with being a female dentist, a-hole male patients sometimes try to bully them. I saw it several times when I worked in a multiple dentist practice. Your friend needs to toughen up a bit and learn how to kick some arse.

Patients, tell me they hate me too and I usually tell them I hate them too. Works for me.

How can a trashy person afford #3?

I got a deep cleaning - I don't know if I needed it or not but they talked me into it when I switched dentists.
One thing I didn't like was the hygienist giving injections.
And the dentist has been trying to get me to let him take out all of my fillings and replace them. Sounds like at least a semi-scam to me so I haven't done it (plus drilling on my teeth hurts, no matter how much they numb it).

This is Louisiana. I'm sure the rate is much higher here.
