Are you buying cash or financing?? 5k over 4-5 years really isn't that big of a difference to get what you really want and have more room.

For the interest rate you're probably going to get raped with on used, look at new. Those 0% or low interest rate loans sometimes make more sense

Same care new is like 38k, interest rates we have been seeing are anywhere from 2.5 - 4.5.

How many kids you got? That's kind of the key variable in this here equation

This, plus how close they are to their teens. If you have teens they'll appreciate having extra room in the back.

If you try to get 0% interest rate, they won't negotiate as hard on the price. Nothing is free.

What about an explorer with less bells and whistles if cost is an issue?

Edge is a great car. My third row has been pushed down since the day after I boughty MDX. Have never flipped it up once in 4 years.

Our third row has been used for seating maybe 10 times in 4 years and was nice to have, but the extra room when folded down is the real reason to get the third row. I couldn't imagine packing for a road trip or driving vacation in a small SUV without the third row for 2 adults and 2 kids.

Plus with the little one on the way, imagine having a stroller, play pin, diapers etc. Then having to get groceries while all that crap is the back.

We have third row seating in my wife's vehicle. Don't use it a lot but we do use it with kids and family sometimes. When you don't use it, you fold the seats down and you have all the cargo area.

We bought the Pilot. It's a good car and I'm not into the whole "looks" thing. It may be boring but compared to the price of the Explorer, we got a great deal and it seats 8 relatively comfortably.

Regarding the 3rd row seat in this day and age I wouldn't NOT have it with kids at home. And like others said even if you don't always use it, fold that seat down and voila -- tons of extra space.

My wife had a Highlander with the 3rd row. With it folded down there was a ton of storage space. And on our beach trip last year, it was nice to be able to take me, the wife, the daughter, the baby, my mother-in-law, and brother-in-law to dinner in one vehicle. We just popped the booster seat in the back and my wife and mother-in-law sat in the 2nd row with the baby in the carseat. Now we have a Sienna, and the wife is now wishing she had kept the Highlander.

We have 2 kids and our third row has been in the attic since we bought the car. Never missed it but would have missed the extra room in back for all their junk.
