I have a family member in high school who is working hard, with hopes on an out of state full ride scholly based primarily on grades.

Is this even a thing?

My nephew got a full ride to FU based on academics. You know, that school in Gainesville, FL that Spawn of Satan used to work for????? I still have pictures of the boy wearing his LSU clothes but he turned on us...

Yep. For LSU, check out the Stamps and President's Alumni scholarships.

Yes, but it's based on grades extra curricular, and ACT/SAT scores.

Alabama allowed you to stack scholarships, so I actually got paid to get my undergrad degree, all based on academic merit. Some schools though cap your scholarships at the cost of attendance.

Thanks for the responses, her preferred schools so far are mostly on the East coast, I'm still in hopes she will change her major interest. She's only a sophomore.

Roll Tide!

I know this is an LSU board and a lot of folks dislike Bama, but over the past 10 years they've really stepped up their recruiting of the best and brightest students from out of state with extremely generous scholarships.

My daughter had a full Academic based scholarship to FSU. Completed her freshman year then transferred back to LSU. Tops can be renistated during your sophomore year only except for military service which lengthens it longer. Of course, Tops is on life support now.

Difference between full ride and full tuition.

Lots of schools give out tuition, full and partial, mostly for academics.

Full ride covers room, board, tuition. Also can gives a student job/stipend and funds to travel abroad. These are very competitive and take more than just academics.

36 on ACT, National Merit Finalist, etc will land you full tuition, some travel money, a job and room/board (for a year or two). There will still be expenses.

At LSU you need a 33 on the ACT to qualify for a full ride, but they only give out 10 or 20 of them ( forget). Otherwise, a 33 only gets you $2,500/year.

Of course - in fact, you can make money if you play your cards correctly.

My brother graduated from Alabama on a full ride. They even bought the kid 2 lap tops while he was there and he had unlimited dining dollars...in the end he got a check every semester for unspent funds. Made me realized I should have given a shite more in HS.

Good info from everyone.

Her grades are beyond excellent, very good extra-curricular, and taking first ACT in 2 months, and still a while to improve (and maintain.)

I've heard people tell her this was possible, but I didn't really know if it existed. I think my average grades and ACT qualified me for a few hundred per semester back in the old days.

I keep assuming the state will get their shite together with TOPS, but if they don't and LSU doesn't offer more academic scholarships, I'm pushing my kid to apply to other SEC schools.
