Is there any such thing as slander on social media anymore

Or is it just accepted to block or delete and ignore. so much shite is said and seen by so many people anymore
Im watching a war of words this evening with a girl I know telling the world that her ex's new gf has HIV . with no proof of her claim. but a shite ton of people are buying it and freaking out . idfk if its true or not
Do people ever take criminal or civil recourse over shite like this. beyong personal arse beatings sometimes im sure
