No, singers today have little talent. It's all done thru electronics. Forget dancing.

There is no one remotely as talented as Michael Jackson out there now since Prince died.

There are many many incredibly talented people with as great or even greater capabilites than Michael Jackson that you or I have never even heard about and will never achieve great fame.

maybe, although Bruno Mars reminds me of Morris Day and Morris Day never had success like that.

I think maybe someone could come up with something as good(don't know who it would be) but pop culture is a lot more fragmented so I don't know if it would be like Thriller.

and now that there has been a Thriller and other successful videos it is harder to come up with something groundbreaking that doesn't seem derivative

Imagine if Prince and MJ collaborated on this level.

It seems pretty crystal clear to me. He was what amounted to the biggest cash cow in Joe's demented universe, and he never got past it.

No, I don't think so.

Bruno Mars is really the only possibility that I can think of, and he's great, but not nearly as big a deal as MJ was in the 80s.

Justin Timberlake

He could do it with that kind of production team and promoting.

And for those who say "nobody watches music videos", do you realize how many views they get on YouTube?

There are 71 videos over TWO BILLION views. And they are ALL music videos.

It was a different time. I was a youngster but remember the hype. It was huge.

This.

Part of thriller's mystique is that it really ushered in the music video/MTV era, which has now been dead for a while.

There is nobody alive that could pull something like that off. Bruno Mars and Timberlake may be at the top of today's performers, but that doesn't mean they are in the same universe as Michael Jackson. As fricked up as that guy was there has never been another entertainer in history that was on that level.

Negative.

"Billie Jean" and "Beat It" and videos from Duran Duran and Billy Idol ushered in the music video/MTV era. MTV was more than 2 years old when "Thriller" was released as a video. The album Thriller had been out for well over a year when the video for the title track was released.

I spent the entire summer of 1983 on my couch watching MTV a la Beavis & Butthead. The "Thriller" video was released in December of that year. MTV had been well ushered in by that point.

Just sayin...
