So, we've decided to take my son out of daycare. We told them today that his last day would be next Friday, the 11th. They wrote back and said since we weren't giving a full 2 weeks notice that we would owe for the following week through the 18th.

I'm crazy to pay for that following week right? They already charge us full rates through the holiday shortened weeks and any week where my kid is on vacation....

Did your contract say you needed to provide a 2 week notice? If so, you owe them.

If they function at capacity at all times, the charge is legitimate because you are costing them money. You probably signed something agreeing to this when you enrolled.

If they don't continually function at capacity, they are ripping you off.

If it is a decent daycare, they are at capacity 100% of the time.

Not as big of a racket as a nanny.

Can you just push your last day back by three days and save yourself a lot of headache and hundreds of dollars?

what amazes me is how much daycare cost but daycare workers are paid just above min wage.

And so many of them are non profit. Where does the money go? are juice boxes that expensive?

It's on the short list of things you don't want to skimp on.

If you are still to pay them, yes. If they already have your money, it is gone. You can piss and moan if it makes you feel better, but they took it.

We pay over $22k/year for daycare. That's a middle of the road, slightly cheaper than average daycare. No juice boxes or diapers or food included.

Just wrote in the childcare deduction amount for 2015 of $13,000, which reminded me that 2016 will be $26,000.

It's worth it, but at this very moment, no. No bigger racket.
