I just saw a Facebook post by some girl whining about the use of the word retarded. It was one of those stupid charts that set up a piece-wise function in which all scenarios arrived upon the conclusion of "retarded" not being appropriate to use. So apart from the obvious answer that word policing is stupid, and if you start getting rid of retarded, you have to do away with a whole lot of other words, is "retarded" even offensive?

I think its used correctly, as opposed to words like "gay" that are only used because of their negative connotation. I find people usually use "retarded" for somebody or something not using max brain power. That's pretty much what the word means. Is it really offensive to use an appropriate word to convey a specific thing to someone?

in a way I think it is

i believe its meant to reflect a mental handicap, and using it to insult someone by comparing them to someone with a handicap is a little offensive

i don't get offended by it, but i could see it

Eh, I think in general it's used to be offensive in the same way that gay or **** is.

I think it's retarded to word police and get offended about little things like this, but I also see their point.

You don't call retarded people retards. It's just bad taste. You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded.

It's not offensive in my opinion. But, it's hard to say that word and not seem like a dumb person.

I used to be on that bandwagon because of my son. And then one day I realized nobody had ever once used the word retarded to or about him and I was just being a bitch on a high horse.

Besides, you ban one word that's offensive, and another crops up that means basically the same thing. I've heard kids says "Dude, are you autistic?" Basically the same meaning and it wasn't one we used when I was growing up. I can't be offended every single time someone does something I disagree with. It's tiresome.

We just covered this topic in my master's course. The proper term now is Intellectually Disabled (ID). The term retarded now has negative connotations and therefore has been scrapped. The problem is that people will use the term ID in a negative way and then it will be scrapped for a newer trendier term like "exceptional."
