Austin Homeowners Realize Taxes Cost Money
quote:
“I’m at the breaking point,” said Gretchen Gardner, an Austin artist who bought a 1930s bungalow in the Bouldin neighborhood just south of downtown in 1991 and has watched her property tax bill soar to $8,500 this year.
"It’s not because I don’t like paying taxes,” said Gardner, who attended both meetings. “I have voted for every park, every library, all the school improvements, for light rail, for anything that will make this city better. But now I can’t afford to live here anymore. I’ll protest my appraisal notice, but that’s not enough. Someone needs to step in and address the big picture.”

Interesting about the left/right angle. Texas will be a blue state before long due to the immigrant population. Austin may be the closest thing you'll find to a California city.
I lived in both for 3-4 years, and I'm pretty confident in saying that Texas and California are the two most hated states. In California, if someone was going to talk shite about a southern or conservative state, they were going to mention Texas. In Texas, they're going to mention California liberals.

Yeah.. We never represent or thank those guys from the Alamo with countless monuments, sculptures, honorary school names etc. Texas can be arrogant. I'll give you that but, to say we don't represent those people is the most asinine thing i have read on the OT. I challenge that our state appreciates its historical figures as much as any other state in the country. Just close your mouth and do a better job of locating your teeth.

I have been in some really good fights in Pascagoula when I was young.
There are things to do there.

No, Texas is it's own thing.
100% perfect.
I mean... they aren't yankees, but they're one of a kind.

Texans can thank southerners for there even being a Texas but you'll never hear that from a Texan. I'll do it for them. Thank you Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, William Travis, Philip Dimmitt, Steven F Austin, Edward Burleson, Frank Johnson, the New Orlean greys, and the countless other southerns who laid down their lives so you can today spout of at the mouth about how great Texas is. You are welcome from every and all southerners.
Bwahahahahaha...
This is so fricking laughable, and I'm from New Orleans.
I mean, ALLLLLL of those names are ALLLLLLL over the place. Bowie, Crockett, Houston, Travis, Dimmitt, Austin, Burleson, and Johnson Counties, the cities of Houston and Austin, the universities of Sam Houston State and Steven F. Austin, and the countless high schools of the same names all say hello.
Besides, a lot of time has passed since those people were in the mix, so to expect Texans of today to shake your hand, say hello, and thanks for coming in there back in the day is, well, just silly...

What about south Louisiana? I've heard it said a few times people don't consider the catholic southern part of south Louisiana including New Orleans to not be true southern.

All of this. They name streets, counties, colleges, and cities after all of these people.

They're culturally different, but they're still part of the south.
That area fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, it's geographically southern, and the United States government considers it part of the south... Just like Texas.

So you don't really get out and drive around much?

I would argue that Texas remembers it's history just as much, if not more, than any other state.
Go to small towns like Gonzales, TX and see all of the "Come and Take It" cannon flags everywhere and the annual festival they have celebrating their history. That's just one of hundreds of small towns in Texas that celebrate their past and the contributions to its history the people there made. And its hard to forget about those people named when nearly every major city in Texas is named for one,

East Texas isn't much different than the other Gulf States

Well, also have to think about something else, all of those names that you mentioned, were people who were basically shunned from their home places.
They were on their last run, backs against the wall.
To be honest, I think most had been ready to become Mexicans anyway, because they signed an agreement with the Mexican Government.

Go eat a sack of dicks. You know less about Texas or Texans than my 7 year old nephew.
