Is it patronizing to say "Merry Christmas" if you don't believe in God/Jesus?

And yes. I do believe that there was a dude named "Jesus" who walked the earth, but do I think he turned water into wine? ...I wish.

I don't feel like I'm being a hypocrite by saying it to my mother who still practices Catholicism... (But maybe I am?)

Can anyone give me a reason as to *why* I do this?

I'm just not that big enough of an a-hole to cause drama over something as trivial (in my mind) as saying "Merry Christmas"...

Please advise.

You can celebrate the secular aspects of Christmas and still enjoy it

White Wine in the sun

You'll appreciate that friend.

Merry Christmas

Somebody says "merry Christmas" to me or my kids, they're getting an arse whipping and that's all there is to it.

I don't need to be talked down to like that, and I am not putting up with it.

Culturally, it's as much of a secular holiday about gift giving and Santa Claus as it is about Jesus.

Even the most devout Christians spend more time on Christmas opening gifts and giving presents than they do discussing and celebrating the arrival of the Messiah.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for anyone to say "Merry Christmas", and it's pretty silly for anyone else to care who says it or the perceived meaning behind it.

I'd say merry Christmas to you in front of your wife and kids and you'd sit there and take it/like it.

No.

I think you are using the word incorrectly. What I think you mean is if it makes you fake or dishonest. I'll answer the question to this. No. It doesn't. Christmas is more than a religious holiday as much as some people would like to pretend that it is. It is a cultural event that is close to obligatory to observe in some fashion as a member of society in the US. It is a time to be happy and be with friends and family. Recognizing this is fine. Moreover even if you decide not recognize the holiday at all wishing others well in observing the holiday as a religious event is perfectly fine as well.

I'm an athiest, and I wish others a Merry Christmas if I know they are Christians.

Just as I would wish my Jewish friends a happy Hanukkah.

I don't have to believe in their celebration to be able to hope that it is special for them.

In the same vane, I don't get offended by being wished a merry Christmas. Someone is literally taking the time to wish me well in a way which is meaningful to them.

This was the one of the best points made so far...

I can respect your beliefs, I would never dare shove my agnosticism down your throats and *make* you believe what I believe.

eta: I'm not *technically* an "atheist"... I'm more agnostic.

So you believe the disciples made up the story of the resurrection? And that each one was willing to be tortured and killed to protect that lie?
