I think the "better together" group has a bill trying to pass the "neighborhood schools"?? I haven't been keeping up with this stuff, but my god it would be so much practical to take this route.

There would still be some shite schools, no doubt.

But with neighborhood schools you would at least have some good ones rather than ALL of them being shite.

It would take time because you'd have to change the mindset of the community, but eventually people would start sending their kids to public schools if they were solid.

Look at the Villages of Houston (Hedwig Village, Bunker Hill, Spring Valley, etc.). Same concept as to what St George is trying to do (I think). They operate autonomously of Houston.

This has been a shite show from the beginning and unfortunately I believe the St George movement was a necessary extreme even though I'm not the biggest fan of the entirety of what will transpire from it.

In the end...neighborhood schools is what needs to happen in some form or fashion.

I live near the Perimeter on the Dunwoody side. Nice place, I just haven't earned enough yet to buy property in Sandy Springs.

One thing that hasn't been pointed out here that I believe is very important in these successful TX neighborhood schools is the tax structure.

In Louisiana, there is a state income tax. Off the bat, you're sending 4-6 percent of your income (after a certain dollar about) to Baton Rouge. From there, the dollars are redistributed into funding of public school. Yes, there is local property tax in LA for schools too, but those are extremely low comparatively.

In TX, no state income tax but significantly higher property taxes. These tax dollars remain local, funded by people in the local communities, for their schools, parks, etc.

I believe that different structure plays a factor in what you see with the great local, community schools in places like Houston and Dallas, and their outlying suburbs.

TX also does not determine school districts strictly by county lines. There are independent school districts all over the place.

Those are great points, I don't think it's any secret that HP can do what it does because of their property taxes

Bitter? Central at this point is a more desirable place than BR. Significantly less crime, better schools, less traffic, and not as cramped.

Bitter might not have been the appropriate word, but every time I decide to open one of these threads you're in it making snippy or condescending comments. I assumed this was another attempt at such, but I'm not familiar with Central so I figured it was inline with your past comments.

HP is also a Chapter 41 (Robin Hood) district. A decent portion of their taxes are recaptured and sent to Austin, where they are re-appropriated for poorer districts.

Don't get me started on school finance. It's an absolute headache.
