The company I work for, a Fortune 500 company, is hiring an entry level position in their Houston area warehouse. It's a picker/puller position. Only high school degree required. No experience necessary.

Starting salary begins at $15/hr but candidate could negotiate for more depending on experience.

Benefits offered on Day 1 are 3 weeks PTO a year(it accrues from Day 1), Health insurance(medical/dental/vision), 401k with 6% company match, $300 fitness reimbursement annually, stock purchase option at 15% discount and at lowest price of the year, annual bonuses, big employee purchase discounts on cars(we have fleet purchasing prices with Chevy, Toyota, and Ford), HP computers, cell phone plans with At&T, etc etc

It's a good company in the medical field that isn't going anywhere. It's pretty much recession proof. Lots of room for advancement.

I've mentioned the opening to some twenty-something's I know and I've been asked if we're looking for felons at that starting wage? Posted on an online forum for the area and got the same responses. They said those are slave wages

These kids expect $25 hr+ to do menial tasks in an entry level warehouse position. I said what about the benefits? No care, it's all about their paycheck every 2 weeks.

One guy told me he can make $22 at Target. I told him he could, but he's not making 40 hrs a week there, his schedule will include nights and weekends, probably no paid PTO(certainly not 3 weeks), no health insurance, 401k etc. He said, yeah, but $22 hr.

Are these people retarded?

Same as chick FIL a and other fast food. Labor is expensive right now and your paying fast food wages.

Yes, the benefits are worth money, but when gas is over $4/gallon, $30k a year just doesn't cut it.

If my choices, as a healthy 20 something were $15/hour picking shite on someone else's schedule or $15/hour driving for Uber on my own, I'd drive for Uber. I just wouldn't value health insurance really.

You’re asking if they’re “retarded” for not wanting to make $30k a year?

Entry level corporate salaries are way up. War for talent is kind of a joke because many of them aren’t bringing anything special to the table other than being a butt in a seat. Once things start to get pinched and the corporate belt tightening begins, those people will the first ones out.

Same at my job. These young guys come in here act like they know everything and don’t want to do the work and want to get paid top dollar. The turnover when I started 22 years ago at my job was less than 2% and that lasted until about 2015. Hell the turnover now probably Hoovers around 25% a year and that includes salary and hourly.

I started with my company making $16.00 20 years ago. I think $15.00 is fair for the kinda work you’re talking about but it depends on who you’re asking about the position.

Gen Z doesn't care about retirement right now. They are staying at jobs an average of only 1.5 years. They also don't care about retirement when they can't afford their rent this month.

$15/hr in a major city is pretty low. My small town Alabama, the fast food places are offering $12/hr starting.

That is a low-ish wage for a major Healthcare company in a major city.

Are you? Someone making $15/hr has no capacity to save any meaningful amount of money. Most of them have big student loan payments and rent is at record levels.

No, they understand supply and demand in labor - $20-25 is the starting average for warehouse work these days. Don't believe me? Look up the starting pay for AWG in Pearl River. It's even higher in some places.

The benefits probably add at least another $15k to the starting wage. I guess I was different when I was in my early 20's b/c I valued getting in with a good company and working my way up. Didn't want to be a 22 yr old working in fast food.

Do they have a better option? If not, they’re retarded. Especially if they have advancement opportunities as the OP suggests.

But whatever. Enjoy that Uber gig.

I went into sales in my 20’s.

I made $80k when I was 25.

I was making over $100k by 27.

They just released a study that showed current college grads are overestimating their earning right out of college by about 50k. The average is 50k, they're all expecting 100k right off the bat.

Also noteworthy that while the average is 50k, I'm sure the median is still closer to 30-40 considering so many college grads are underemployed. They're in for a shock when they find out degrees in history and sociology do nothing for them.

They’re probably thinking more immediately about their rent. Can’t really afford much of a living situation on that paycheck, at least in any size city, not to mention leftover cash for social outings, meals, etc. Benefits don’t help with that.
