Is Gavrilo Princip the most important person of the last century?

Without him, every war since ww1 wouldn't have happened. No space race, no ussr, no rise of fascism, no technological boom.
I bet most don't know who he is or what he did. Today the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, I wonder if Japan is the one variable that would have existed regardless of Gavrilo's actions.

eeehhh, he elevated himself to a huge role no doubt, but WWI was going to happen with or without Ferdinand being assassinated. That was just the excuse the royals used to mobilize.

more important than the founder of TD.com?

The most important historical event of the 20th century -- indeed the past 500 years -- is the infiltration of the West by Muslims.

It's definitely something interesting to think about. With the rival alliances in Europe and widespread jingoism, I imagine that there would have been war anyway within 10 or 20 years. On the other hand, the rivalries could have developed into a different cold war played out in the African and Asian colonies.

No, it's not. And it wouldn't have happened but for the two world wars.

A general war in Europe was going to occur one way or another. It had been brewing since the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and had almost kicked off several times before 1914.

Didn't we just do this thread a couple months ago?
To the broader point, you can't blame the match for all the gasoline soaked into the otherwise dry wood.
That fire was going to burn. The timing was the only thing Pricip was responsible for. European (eta: realignment) was well past due - the Franco-Prussian War a generation before was relatively inconclusive (except for its role as a catalyst to create the modern, relatively unified German state) - and something would have had to be done about the Ottomans - sooner or later.
The most important person of the last century - depending on your perspective is almost certainly Adolf Hitler - while a sequel to WWI was nearly inevitable - the breadth and scope of the destruction was exclusively the result of one man's vision and the death cult he created.

I actuary don't, but I may start. I was reading an alt history book and was wondering how different things would be if he failed the assassination.

The timing if the war though directly led to the red revolution in Russia.
Preventing that alone would have changed the last seventy years drastically.
Would we even have gone to the moon? Would Germany have been the space leaders?
