Steve Sarkisian is suing USC for firing him:

Steve Sarkisian sued the University of Southern California on Monday, alleging the school breached the football coach's contract and discriminated against him on the basis of a disability - namely alcoholism - when it fired him this fall.

I have heard many times that alcoholism is a disease, but never a disability. Should handicapped people be pissed off? What say you OT?

Manziel absolutely used this idea when he put himself in rehab. It prevented the team from cutting him. I'm not at all surprised Sark did this. Typical gaming the system style move.

While I am not an alcoholic, I know people who are. For those who seeked help, it is a daily struggle to not drink. They don't want to drink, but the urge is there. If it was a choice people would not have to struggle with it.

Having to deal with an alcoholic father on a daily basis still, I would definitely say its a disease. I live away from that situation now, but I also know I have to choose appropriate interaction times with him.

I feel deep down that he knows what he is doing is wrong and it hurts everyone around him, but he just can't choose not to drink. It truly has taken over his life and some could argue that it has disabled him both physically and emotionally.

Don't want to post details but I lost the love of my life to wine. Multiple IP, OP and intensive after care programs later, I had to leave. I couldn't fix her. BTW, HS Salutatorian, college 3.9 and 150+ IQ. It was the third glass that flipped the switch... By the 5th, I put her to bed and kissed her cheek.

Then why did he hide his disability? He should have been upfront with USC if he considered it a disability, especially one that would affect his job performance.

Unfortunately various forms of mental illness still have a huge stigma in our country. There is a persistent mentality of "If I can do something then so can you." Therefore, a lot of these diseases are treated as a form of weakness in character.

It's a disease that disabled him, at least temporarily, from performing his duties. I am very anti lawsuit liberal bullshite but it is what it is. If the administration had anything to die with it becoming public then they should be held accountable for at least that... but I assume that'll be hard to prove unless the AD went on record stating it.

Not sure about mental illness. Probably more depression related IMO. I have brother just out of rehab for this.

I'm pretty sure I read that the state of California defines it as a disability, hence the basis for the disability argument in the lawsuit.

USC knew he was an alcoholic when they hired him. If his drinking was such a concern, then they probably shouldn't have hired him in the first place.

Regardless of what you call it, he shouldn't get 30 million unless he was upfront with them when he got hired, and told them he may stumble in cursing in front of crowds periodically while representing USC

I can get on board with it being a disease. However that doesn't mean you can drink all you want and have no consequences. If someone comes to work drunk you should be able to fire them. The urge to drink is the disease, not the getting drunk all the time part.
