Most of this is a result of an eggcorn or malapropism. We learn most of our language through listening, and therefore never learn the phrase in its written form. Regional dialect and accents largely effect how many of these phrases are learned. Thus, when people type them out they are going to write them down the same way they say them.

Forte - a thing at which someone excels - is correctly pronounced "fort", not "for-tay."

Fair enough, but you have to admit it is comical that people believe it

Means the same as regardless

For instance, you won't find anyone that believes irrational and rational mean the same thing. Well, I take that back, I forgot about people on The Rant.

Literally from your link

quote:

In the sense of a person's strong suit ( He draws well, but sculpture is his real forte), the older and historical pronunciation of forte is the one-syllable [fawrt] (Show IPA) or [fohrt] pronounced as the English word fort. The word is derived from the French word fort, meaning “strong.” A two-syllable pronunciation [fawr-tey] is increasingly heard, especially from younger educated speakers, perhaps owing to confusion with the musical term forte, pronounced in English as [fawr-tey] and in Italian as [fawr-te] . Both the one- and two-syllable pronunciations of forte are now considered standard.

Modal stacking is non-standard, but not as frowned upon as it once was. Please don't stack modals.

While I regularly pronounce it that way, it is pronounced like the peanut butter. It was confirmed by the guy that created it. LINK

I say it with a hard "g" because if you say it with a "j" it just sounds stupid.

I've heard this a lot by broadcasters.

Sure, but as your link clearly states, it is the result of people pronouncing the word incorrectly for years.

Dictionaries also include irregardless and the improper use of literally. It doesn't necessarily make it correct.

That being said, I didn't see the light until Broke educated the world in the thread on mispronounced words.

It is rampant at this time of the year. Pat Forde pointed it out in his Forde-yard dash column last week, but until then, I was oblivious.
