Probably get in a 1bd/1bth about 700sq feet with a doorman and garage in the upper west side for about $500k, so that's what if purchase for a vacation home and rent it out of vrbo and airbnb while not up there.

Maui. I like the island as it's both industrialized and remote. Property taxes aren't that bad & a good place can stay rented consistently, therefore allowing for the creation of an LLC.

The problems for me are the distance & the high costs to maintain.

Lower 48 makes it harder.

Probably in Maine, in a university town, where I could rent it out for the university year, and stay there summers.

Tax wise, Texas.

It's amazing how many people don't actually read the OP.

Butte La Rose.

JK Some place warm, a place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.

The Lake Tahoe area would be nice

Just looked this weekend at a 500sq ft cabin in the Sunnyside area for $440K. Great location, tiny house. good luck finding anything for $500K that is decently sized or located.

I would put $500000 in my mutual fund, and rent when I traveled. Let some other sucker do the up keep.

I could right now and don't. Sure as hell not going to if I can't rent it out, that would be one of the dumbest decisions ever made.

I'm with you here.

What's the saying? Buy utility, rent luxury.

I don't like to be chained to one location on vacation. Buying a "vacation house" would make me feel obligated even if I could make a little money off it. Can't even do that per OP so no.
