Probably get in a 1bd/1bth about 700sq feet with a doorman and garage in the upper west side for about $500k, so that's what if purchase for a vacation home and rent it out of vrbo and airbnb while not up there.

No

Is 500k even doable in Lake Tahoe?

Probably not in the city of Lake Tahoe, but you could buy a place somewhere in the general vicinity of the lake and mountains for under 500k.

30-A. Close enough to home to visit often, I like the beach, and its just the right amount of trashy.

It's not the buying that is the issue, it is the taxes, insurance and upkeep with nobody around. It's never fun to show up after 2 months and find out something has been leaking the whole time, or the fridge stopped 4 weeks ago. Take that 500k, I vest it and rent what you want whenever you want to go. Much less hassle. I know of what I speak

Somewhere in Northern New Mexico or Southern Colorado - country there is just breathtaking without being overwhelming.

Da fuq? My garage costs me over $500 a month. You can get a walk up for that price.

I was going to bust his arse too but he did say Jackson Wyoming area. Pretty much anything in that WY/MT/ID region would be awesome. As long as you are at peace with Yellowstone blowing one day.

You can get a decent cabin/ranch for <$500k in the Pinedale area at the foot of the Wind River Range.

Honorable mention:
Sangre de Cristo range in NM (Taos, Angel Fire, Red River)

Lots of great little ranches/ranchettes tucked away in the foothills of the Chiricahuas. I was there a few months back to hike some of the peaks, incredible scenery even with the burns. That place is a gem hidden in the desert.

We bought a log cabin home in the Smokey Mountains - Tennessee. Fits within your budget guidelines,
close proximity to Louisville, KY., where family and friends can accompany if we want.

Colorado / Wyoming area probably.

This is what I'm thinking. Not sure if my wife would agree, though.

But why not? Sounds like a dumb self imposed restriction.

I didn't want potential income to be a deciding factor. Figured it would be more thought-provoking to take rental out of the equation. Of course you could rent it out....it's your property
