Whether you believe it or not the Bible is the most influential book written in the history of our species. The entire literature world would not5 exist without it, the printing press was invented solely to publish this book. The lessons for it form the root of almost all modern laws and governments. Billions have been killed over its existence and interpretations. Some of the both brightest and darkest days in human history can be traced back to this tome. I say all this as a heathen non-believer as well. It would take an absolute fricking idiot to be

Uhh, Yes and you know it.

The bible has been used as justification to subjugate and kill billions. God, Gold, and Glory my friend. From the crusades to the inquisition through the subjugation of the new world the bible has been the driving force behind most of the genocides in history.

One billion would be a lot. Billions is an exaggeration.

Religion in general. I get the point some have made that this is a major piece of literature in general. IMO, we have such clearly drawn lines when it comes to religion that I think it should have been left out.

One of our Scholars Bowl topics for History was World Religions. Public schools never complained.

Doesn't everyone know the direct correlation of believing in religion and intelligence.

BRMHS students are smart, therefore don't need to praise a god.

A high ratio of poor people are dumb, hence they pack the churches.

This is such crap. How does studying the Bible make one religious?

There's more to it than just being a major piece of literature. Without it we can't have any real reference point for how we got here. You can't just leave it out because some people are nuts who cherry pick literal interpretation. The Bible isn't religion though. And I agree that religion should be left to religion.

I am not going to argue that point, you do realize we are talking about thousands of years.
Even Hitler claimed god was with him. Stalin was trying to stamp it out. Between the two and the world war they caused around 100 million deaths in two decades alone. Most estimates put the death toll from evangelist unwittingly spreading disease at around 150 million depending on estimates. We are not even going to get possible premeditated exposure to indigenous peoples world wide. So peg the number wherever it suits you. Whether it be 1 or 100 billion the bible has been the greatest cause of human misery in history. On the other hand it was responsible for lifting us out of the dark ages and providing a base for our laws and government so take the good with the bad just don't project your fairy tales onto me.

I don't see why that's so

Maybe I'm a special snowflake, but I studied the Bible extensively in my undergrad and I'm just as much of a godless heathen now as I was then.

Some people ready Harry Potter and start a quittitch team. The Bible isn't much different.

During the final round, after correctly answering the math question, the follow-up questions were from the "literature" category. They were asked a series of questions about women in the BIBLE! Obviously, the Catholic schools closed it out. The BRMHS kids were incredulous but found a lot of humor in the situation and won't lose any sleep over it.

Kind of an unfair source, but then again many kids would also be familiar with it.

I did quiz bowl for 10 years throughout school. There is no such thing as off limits, we got Bible questions often. Hell potpourri was likely the most common category, and that was just a scramble of random trivia.

This wasn't "unfair", this was just one team getting questions they knew. It happens. I memorized every country and capital before our state meet once, in the semi-finals we got countries and capitals for our lightning round. shite happens.

By the way I'm really fricking cool if you couldn't tell by the above.

How is it less unfair than asking random questions about The Canterbury Tales, which most high school kids, and people in general, haven't read all of, and are written in middle english? It's quiz bowl not common core bowl.

At least 100 billion

Meh. Hamurabi's code is earlier and the Greeks and Romans did not rely on the bible for laws/government. That's all overblown by people with agendas.
