If you aren't already running then 10 minutes is a good start. Pretty quickly, a week or so, you should be under 8 minutes if in reasonably good health. It's more of adjusting to the breathing. The first half mile will be the challenge for a beginner.

My wife broke under 6 minutes in the first mile of a 5k. I used to be able to barely break 8 minutes

Time to start running again I guess

I am 45 and just ran a mile last week at 8:40. I felt like I was running like the wind , my 5k pace is a little under 10 or right at it, depending the wind.

Really would like to get to a 27 minute 5, and a 10 under 1 hour and I will be happy.

My mile 18 months ago was a little over 12

A reasonably healthy person should be able to run 1 mile in under 8 minutes pretty easily and I don't think that is setting the bar very high

That is amazingly impressive! I'm not that connected to the running community anymore but when I was I knew less than 10 local females capable of hitting sub 6 minute splits in races. Pretty much all of them had college running experience.

I am not fast by any means - actually pretty slow. I think my best 5K time was only 22 minutes.

A 44:00 10K will generally put you in the Top 500 finishers of the CCC.

That's pretty good, IMO.

I don't think I could have held that pace for that long! When we were stationed in MD, there was an excellent loop on base that was exactly 5.5 miles with small to moderate hills. My best time on that was 48 minutes. Not exactly that pace, but then again it also had small to moderate hills. But, I don't think I could have made a 44:00 10K.
