It's really all relative to how old you are, how in shape you are, your gender, your experience, etc.

I used to race the mile. My perspective is that any adult who can run it 10 minutes and under is okay in my book, especially if you're over 40 and/or you don't run regularly.

If you're in your 20's and 30's, I would drop that to around 8.5 minutes or so.

If you're the kind of person who runs all the time, that number should be around 7 minutes.

The only people who should strive to run under 7 are serious competitive runners. And if you're one of those, then you know 7 isn't fast enough. You should be shooting for under 5:30.

A good high school miler runs under 5 consistently. If you run under 5, you shouldn't be looking for validation from anyone for anything, ever, when it comes to running. You're the real deal. Your card has been punched.

A state champion should be able to run in somewhere in the neighborhood of 4:00 - 4:20. And 4:00 is near superhuman.

Under 4... you should be training for big, big things. This is where most of the OT runs the mile.

Overall FEMALE ran at 7:04 min/milepace.

Over MALE ran at 5:38 min/mile pace. That's a significant difference over the course of over 26 miles.

It tightens up at the elite levels. The men are running 4:50 to 5:00 miles, with the women running 5:30 to 5:40, generally (roughly corresponds to 2 hour and 2 1/2 hour marathons).

Any woman who runs a marathon under 4 hours, even, gets my salute - 3 hours? - that's faster than I can run the 100m

This is hilarious.

Reasonably healthy? 10 minutes

Decent speed 8:30

I run a decent amount (half marathons) and run at about a 9:40 pace. That's my speed when I run a 5k-13.1 miles, I don't vary much.

Sort of depends upon age.

I mean, if you're 55 and you're running sub 10, you're better than probably 99% of your peers.

If you're 25 and running 10s, you're kinda slow.

I would say average high school miler but I agree with your point, if you've ever run a sub 5 minute mile no one can say much to you (I think 95% of men over 18 in this country couldn't even run a 75 sec quarter-mile).

For grown up non-competitive runners 1 mile under 6 minutes is really impressive and means you are probably in tremendous shape.

I don't know man. 10 minute mile. That's barely running at all. I think there's a cut off point where those who could finish at all, would finish much quicker than you think. If that makes sense. I'm not sure how to explain what I'm trying to say. Like, if you can finish a mile, you can probably do better than 10 min/mile. But then, a lot of people would eventually finish but would walk portions so that would bring the average way down.

eta: I think among reasonably healthy people who can finish a mile without walking, 8 minutes is about right. Maybe that's not what this thread is about, though. But if you count people who walk then it fricks everything all up.

I try to run with my wife, but she stops running too easily. As soon as she starts breathing heavy, she stops. I tell her that she can keep running but she just says its too hard. I always tell her that if you can talk you aren't running hard enough.

She usually gets mad and walks home

<-----same here

it's why i can't train with my wife. i'll join her if i just want to jog or hang out or need a recovery run/ride. but it's hard to train with a significant other who is faster or slower. luckily she understands this and doesn't hate me for it : )

I strive to run 3 miles under 24 minutes......I ran 3 miles in about 22.5 minutes the other day. I think it depends on your personal physique. Some people just arent naturally designed to run distances, and maybe even less fit to run exactly a mile well. Can really vary widely.

For someone who runs just to stay in shape, and not necessarily. An 8 minutes mile is decent. When I run long distance, farthest I do is about 2.5 miles.(I hate running long distance, ID much rather sprint) I'all do about 21-23 minutes.

Running has proved to be un healthy for your joints in the long run so maybe your questions lacks way too many details. There are way too many variables that will determine how fast you run. A person could be perfectly healthy and run a mile 2 minutes slower than someone who is about to have a massive stroke and die.

I'm enjoying these post that are saying 5 minute miles are what he should strive for..... Those are basically a minute off the world record times (3:46 is record I believe)
A 5 minute mile is near elite status a 4 minute mile is elite and a 6 minute mile would put him upper lvls of physical fitness.

Maybe I am not a runner, even though I run 20 miles per week. I don't know the last time I went out and ran one mile as fast as I could, but I know for certain it wasn't sub 7 minutes

I am just looking around at the people I work with, and I know for a FACT that I am in better shape than 90% of them. Most of them could not run a mile without stopping.

A good jog pace for me is about 9:30

I'd say 8 for a mile. 1630 for 2. 25 for 3. 34ish for 4.
